Yale-NUS Round 2 Interviews

Thanks, anyone visiting this site because they got an interview, please support the community of round 2 applicants!

@thesmiter: Now that I think about it, some of my friends who applied to Yale NUS through the Yale app haven’t gotten an interview call yet. HouseI might be right to think that those who applied exclusively to Yale NUS are getting an interview call first.

Hmm, that sounds reasonable as well. I’m the only one at my school who applied to Yale-NUS, so I don’t have anywhere else to go to for gossip.

I really hope that’s true. @HouseI: I haven’t gotten an interview email yet. I keep checking daily as the clock ticks down. I’m praying I made the cut to be shortlisted.

I had my interview last week and I applied through Yale. There is no order to the applications they were all put into one pool.

@nikcarverhill: Oh, shoot, here comes my anxiety again. If you’re willing, could you either post your stats and ECs? I would like to see what kinds of candidates they’re shortlisting. But if you’d rather keep it private, that’s cool too.

Had my interview today! It went really well! I was getting nervous that the interview might be really intense considering the acceptance rate is so small, but it was really chill!

There are three of us who got the interview from Yale NUS from our school, and this might be completely coincidental but all of us got the email according to our surnames. So the one whose surname started with a C got it before I did as mine started with an M.

^Anyone to confirm this surname pattern?

@applepie: who interviewed you?

@hopingforbetter: My surname falls in the middle of the alphabet, and I got a call in january. but im an international student.

Well I am an international too. My surname starts with P. Okay, I think I am not shortlisted:(

Nobody’s willing to share stats? ): One week left for interview offers, panic time.

Please, please, if you want to, share your stats so the rest of us can at least see what they’re looking for.

I guess I’ll (sort of) share my stats…

SAT scores weren’t that good.
Grades: Mostly A’s and B’s (or A’s and A+'s depending on how they translate my grades)
EC: “outstanding\highly impressive” according to several interviewers.

I can speak 4 languages.

Got an interview request about 1 or 2 weeks ago. The first letter of my last name is close to the bottom of the alphabet.

Anyone want to share theirs?

@Scandinavian: Thank you. I’ll post my stats in return.
SAT: 2280 single sitting, 790 CR 690 M 800 W
Grades: 3.89 Cumulative UW, 4.6ish W cumulative
ECs: here’s the downer. Not much that is quantifiable - few if any awards. Lots of leadership, though. ECs are relatively weak, but volunteering is strong (5+ years, hundreds of hours spent)

:I here’s to hoping for a request sometime this week… My last starts with C; I’m doubtful of the last name order for interview requests.

I guess this is the point because thesmiter also has good stats except ECs.

@thesmiter I didn’t have any awards (as it’s not a common custom in my country to give awards to students…not that the admissions office knows that or anything).

I’m guessing that the first the Ad. thinks about is about filling their pre-set criteria. Considering the fact that they only have 50 spots I’d assume that they want people with different backgrounds from different countries. (Just like any other Ivy League)
If you’re a US citizen that means that you’re fighting for… say, 10-25 final spots with about 8000 other kids.

tldr;
If there’s too many people with an (almost) identical background (race, country, EC, financial background, essay etc) then getting an interview is akin to winning the lottery.

I think Scandinavian is right.

More than that, I get the feeling that they’re looking for students who are different and unique in terms of grades, ECs, etc. My grades were not amazing. But my ECs (although I wouldnt say they were amazing), were different.

So that’s my theory :)

@nice19 yeah, my EC’s were a nice mix of normal stuff (MUN, student government) and uniqueness :p

Also, if I’m remembering correctly, I could request an interview until somewhere around March the 7th on their website. So they’re still doing interviews for another week or two.

then its definitely the same pattern as round 1. they’re interviewing until a week or two before decisions. My interviewer said that the decisions would come somewhere between mid to end march.

I take it there’s no way to request an interview without getting a call?

Thanks for speculation, guys. (: This thread keeps me somewhat sane. I really need to know whether I even have a chance of getting in, because if I go here (it’s a high-ish priority on my college list), then I’d have to make changes to my travel plans for the summer.

@globaldolphin: No, they request you for an interview. The requests are only given to students who have been shortlisted.
