Ok. So I know this is a question that’s incredibly difficult to answer, but hopefully someone here can give me advice. I’ve been lucky enough to be offered a place at both Yale and Cambridge University in England (pending I meet my grades for A-Level), and I’m totally stuck as to what to do. For some background, I currently reside in the UK (but have American citizenship), hopeful poli sci/econ major, still unsure as to what I want to do with my future (something in the social sciences most likely). Cambridge has the advantage of being closer to home for me and maybe carries a better reputation in England, but I love the States, and think that a liberal arts education would suit me well. If cost is discounted, can anyone give any advice as to the advantages of either over the other? Are the two roughly equal in terms of reputation in the US?
Yes. Reputation is not the right way to look at it.
What did you sign up to study at Cambridge? There is a lot more flexibility to switch majors (or double major) and gain a broader education at Yale. At Cambridge, you’d delve deeply in to one subject (or the subjects you signed up for). At Yale, you could (though you’re forced to take other classes as well) but you could also take classes in a bunch of other subjects, double major in disparate subjects, etc. If there isn’t one subject you absolutely love right now, I’d choose Yale.
Yale is the better choice for you because you are uncertain as to your choice of major area of study. Consider earning a masters degree at Cambridge.
