Yale or Duke?

I am faced with the difficult situation of picking out where I want to go.

I got into Yale and Duke. What are some reasons I should/should not pick Yale...or Duke (if you're knowledgeable in Duke) I'm not extremely concerned with the name of Yale since Duke is also prestigious. Money is no issue since I received a great financial aid packet. Eventually I want to go to medical school, but I do not want to major in the typical medical student majors like: chem, biochem, bio, etc. A list of pros/cons would be very helpful. Thanks!

Oh, I also got into Stanford and Dartmouth.

Well... it's good that you don't want to major in sciences at yale because "Science Hill" at yale is a mile away from main campus and requires a shuttle to get to. IMO, that's why Yale sucks for sciences. Duke is good for premed. But ultimately... med school is based on MCATS + GPA.

My perception is that there is a different vibe on campus. I think the Greek scene is more visible and important at Duke than at Yale. I also think Duke is more conservative than Yale on a number of measures. It depends on the student whether these things are good or bad. I think the Greek scene is bigger and the campuses are more conservative at Stanford and Dartmouth as well.

While the social life on the Yale campus is excellent and people don't go to New York all the time, it's nice to have such a great city only a quick train ride away.

The weather is nicer at Duke.

Yale's residential college system really is something special.

Visit your top choices if at all possible. If you've got good FA packages, Yale may help you come to Bulldog Days.

just wanted to bump this up to the top. I'm making the same choice, but I'm not doing medicine.

your real choice in my view is b/w stanford and yale since these are the two that will best prepare you for med admissions (just look at admit rates...yale's is beyond excellent).

the distance to science classes is almost irrelevant, since at most ivy's science buildings are far away..its just a result of the history of these schools trying to cope with modern developments.

Duke's admit rates of premed students into med schools is 85%...pretty excellent if you ask me.

Hah, how I wish I could choose between Duke and Yale. I'm happy to be going to Duke, but Yale... Yale was my dream school for soooo long.

Visit both and decide what you like from there, though--just because it's no contest for me doesn't mean that you might see something different in the comparison.

yes, Duke's admit rate is very good. Yale's however, is higher. I can provide no links to substantiate this, but having seen the numbers in person at both schools, I know this.

Roughly, given that you're saying that Duke's is 85%, Yale shows theirs to be over 90%...so that in itself is something

sphairistic, I WANT to be in your shoes. When I learned about my acceptance to Duke I went crazy because I didn't think I had a chance. And I also love Duke. Then the next day I learned about Yale...Now, let me tell you. Yale is my dream school, but I do not know much anything about it. So I was hoping I would be rejected before I checked my decision. Lo and behold, I got in. I was floating for an hour after I found out my decision. But then I fell back into the harsh reality of making a choice before May. This may sound silly, but I felt depressed b/c if I choose one, I lose the other. Ugh.

I'm visiting Duke right now for their Blue Devil Days and I will come to the Yale Bulldog Day on the 16th.

Thank you for all your help. Please keep on giving advice/information.

Go with the school you like the most. The distinction will be clear after you go to each school's admitted students weekend. I think you'll like Yale more, but I'm biased :p
