Yale or full ride to usd

When D1 was applying 4 years ago, she was offered a full ride to Trinity College in Hartford. It was their presidential award that they only gave to a handful of students (maybe 5?). When D1 visited the school, their claim to fame was their placement rate to medical schools (I think they said 100%, not sure if they did any weed out). I know there were students who gave up admission to Ivies because they wanted to go to medical school. D1 faints seeing blood, so it wasn’t in her card to go to medical school. She wanted to into finance, so UG school mattered.

I could list the posts and there were many of them where this was inferred, but I don’t see the point. Another poster said it far better than I could.

“Extolling the virtue of a school is not arrogant. The implication that the students who attend that school are so markedly distinct that they need to associate with their own kind in order to flourish is over the top IMO”

There have already been some very well-reasoned arguments for Yale presented in this thread. I’m wondering why you felt the need to undermine the credibility of your position with this kind of post. This is one case where I feel quite safe using the term elitist.

^^^Gee, I missed that one. If I’d seen it, I wouldn’t have bothered to get involved here at all. Was it tongue in cheek?

Ooh!! This is a good time to use my line:* If you are in the OP’s situation, be sure that your kid can run from front and still set their best time.* As to my personal bias, as I am neither a member of the first B or the second B, it really doesn’t matter much what I think. ;)

midmo, I pointed that gem out. lol. It was classic.

This started on post 53 (and before, but little bit more subtle), way before swan and duck came into play, it all went down hill from there. At that point, no one was claiming their kids were special (except for my kids, they are very special in their own way), but some poster had to twist it.

This reference to BandB reminds me of the book "Bonfire of the Vanities. I am sure Tom Wolfe would find these quotes very amusing.

^^^The phrase “Best and the Brightest” was the title of a book about how JFK’s Harvard cronies managed to get the US bogged down in southeast Asia despite their uber credentials. It was meant to be ironic.

EDIT: In the context of this thread, I assume it means those students whose academic records during pre-college years qualifies them to be considered for enrollment at the most highly selective universities. I doubt that anyone here, other than sorghum, actually thinks top intellectuals are better people.

I have found that poster to be a bit of a gadfly. (Takes one to know one, I guess) Whether he/she actually believes that, I don’t know.

Again, don’t want to jump directly back into the discussion, just eating my nachos here on the sidelines.

midmo, here’s the only B and B quote on the thread.

Poetgrl, You’re right - I misinterpreted your post. I apologize

Took me a while to get BandB. Sunday brunch with family (all you can drink champagne). You guys have fun. I am sure there will be 20 more pages by the time I come back. Just don’t call me any more names until I come back.

“Best and brightest” is referring to students, not people.

If you want to argue that USD has better and brighter students than Yale, bring it on.

Thanks, curmudgeon. I forgot that it was the World’s best and brightest.

Still needs the modifier ‘some’.

Bay- define better. I will give Yale brighter.

Took tougher classes and got a higher gpa in high school.

It’s a darn good thing that you never coached Dave Wottle! :D

I had go to wikipedia to understand the Dave Wottle reference. For a minute there, I thought I was losing it.

I would agree is Best is an academic qualification. I would disagree if Best is a character judgment. Not that many at the Ivies are worthy of consideration as best in character.
