As you can see by reading this thread there are a lot of stories of kids who were deferred then accepted RD, or deferred/rejected and then accepted at a terrific school. However, I remember all too clearly just how devastating it was last year when DD was deferred. Believe me, she had a lot of doubts about herself - if Yale didn't want her EA, they certainly wouldn't want her RD. And what about all of the other schools where she applied? It made for a long stressful year.

Fortunately, she also had a happy ending. She was accepted at hYp and several LAC's and she is now a very happy Bulldog. Keep in mind that they will only admit a certain # of students EA, so even if you are a superb candidate you may be deferred until the RD round. Especially with the # of applicants so high, the percentage accepted EA will be pretty low.

I envy those kids who receive their decisions early. It makes for a much nicer senior year, but for those of you who don't get the response you want, take heart and know that next year at this time you will be happier than you have ever been in your life.

Yeah, this thread is a nice read no matter what sickeningly selective school you applied early to.

Also know that you don't even have to get those HYP dream schools in April for everything to turn out OK. I know a girl who was deferred from her Ivy ED with strong stats, ECs, and even legacy status...and then was rejected in RD. Not only that--she didn't get into ANY of those schools she was really dreaming about. She "settled" for NYU (with a guaranteed transfer to one of the Ivies she wanted) and was unhappy about it...until she started going to NYU. She really loves it and now is not even certain about transferring.

thank you so much for the encouragement. now that we're only a few days away, i don't think i've ever been so anxious in my life. i keep on checking the status of my eli account even though i know nothing about that page is going to change until the 14th. ahhhh i guess i'll just see how it goes.

I've got another story to add to this: My sister was deferred EA Harvard, but got into RD...let's see if I can list 'em... Yale, Princeton, Northwestern, Duke, MIT, Caltech, Dartmouth....uh, there are six more, but I can't think of them. She's now incredibly happy at Yale. :)

Glad to see that people are still finding my old thread useful. It certainly still applies. For an update: my daughter is now a senior at Harvard and has loved her time there. When walking from place to place around Cambridge she always cuts through Harvard Yard if it's halfway on the way - just to walk through one more time, sadly knowing that she will have to leave in a few months. It's been great. And the sharp sting of getting rejected by Yale four years ago is merely a distant memory. (Plus football-wise Yale actually did her a favor. Going to Harvard also meant that she got to enjoy being on the winning side in 3 out of the 4 Harvard/Yale football games during tenure... sorry I digress).

So wherever you get in, be it joyously at Yale or at some other great school because Yale didn't have room for you, just remember that if you make the most of your opportunities and keep on with the same high energy and enthusiasm that made you a viable Yale candidate in the first place, chances are excellent that it will turn out great.

how does a person get a guaranteed transfer to an Ivy? My daughter was deferred at Dartmouth today, and we are all sitting here in a funk trying to decide what to do next.

i just feel like it's weird that we know a lot about each other but nothing at the same time. for example, i have a crazy laugh, ate mexican food on thanksgiving, and decorated my car with rudolph antlers and nose for xmas. but you would never know that from this site, hahaha.

I feel the same way... I am ambidextrous, have performed in a circus, and tie ribbons to all my friends' cars' side mirrors on their birthdays. And I'm short.

Who'da thunkit?
