    Essays (rating 1-10, details):
  • CommonApp: 6 - quirky piece about my relationship with my father and his “culture snobbiness” and how I learned to develop my own tastes and defend them. My Yale admissions officer said he loved it, although originally I hadn’t felt it was very strong
  • Essay #1 (passion/interests): 7 - I wrote about a 27 page paper I wrote at the end of my Junior year on McCarthyism, showing my passion for research and history. Don’t know how much about myself it really showcases, but it’s a subject I enjoyed discussing.
  • Essay #2 (community): 9 - Discussed attending a school for the arts and the challenges of reaching out to non-art students and encouraging their creativity, as well as lobbying for funding. I think it showed how passionate I am about art, and how I’m willing to take initiative to bring that into my community.
  • Short Answer Supplementals: 8 - Had some funny ones, had some that I answered in a poetic manner, but overall I think I showed my personality well.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: My US History and Gov teacher - 10 - Multiple teachers have told me that he describes me as the best student he has ever had, and I’m very confident that that same appreciation was relayed through his recommendation. We have a great relationship.
Teacher Rec #2: My Algebra II teacher, Debate and NHS sponsor - 9 - Not only was I a great student in her class, but we have a fantastic working relationship outside the classroom. She has definitely seen the ugly sides of me, but also my persistence and leadership skills.
Counselor Rec: 7 - I have barely spoken to this women, and I sort of assume that she writes the same recommendation for all students based on the resume we provide her.
Additional Rec: N/A
Interview: 9 - We had a great discussion spanning many topics, from being a lesbian, to art, to the origins of religion, to Dollar Tree. He emailed me after the interview saying that he was “highly recommending me for acceptance”.

Portfolio: Eight pieces showcasing technical skill as well as my conceptual interests. Included my national recognized piece and several of my state-award winning pieces. Some political commentary.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes (and recieved a ton of it)
Intended Major: Fine Art or History
State (if domestic applicant): Virginia
Country (if international applicant): N/A
School Type: Small, low-income art school - I was the second student ever to attend that has been accepted to an Ivy League
Ethnicity: White
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: >100k a year
Hooks (URM, first generation college, Questbridge, etc.): First Generation College student

Reflection

Strengths: Applying into a minority major (Art) - First gen/low income - strong recommendations
Weaknesses: SAT scores and summer opportunities, though my low income status helps explain why I was working during the summer rather than doing something academic
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: The admissions process really is a game of chance, but probably due to my high level of skill in art and how involved I am in my extracurriculars
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: University of Virginia, College of William & Mary, School of the Art Institute of Chicago, School of Visual Art, Parsons School for Design, Virginia Commonwealth University, Hartford University (Accepted to all)

Yale was the only Ivy League I applied to, and I applied on a whim.
