YALE RD CLASS OF 2019

@Shabuwa @bosphorus I read a message somewhere saying they don’t offer RD interviews until January, not sure what my source was so I could be wrong.

Just out of curiosity why didn’t you guys apply SCEA - did you apply to other ED/EA schools instead?

@fizzy110 I didn’t have my ACT scores back yet and didn’t want to apply if they weren’t good enough. (They are still sub par; however they are better than my SAT).

@Shabuwa Oh, okay! I think a 30+ is good enough though, a 25 would be sub-par

@fizzy110 I sure hope so, I mean the 30 certainly doesn’t help my case, but its enough for me to remain in consideration.

@Shabuwa Don’t worry about it too much, I know that there are all sorts of rumors about the adcoms not considering candidates that have below a certain score, but I’m choosing to trust that they actually use the holistic approach - you should too

@fizzy110‌ I was also not finished with my testing so i decided to wait for regular decision. Also did not want to get emotionally attached and disappointed if i got deferred.

This definitely isn’t the right thread for me- considering I applied SCEA and all- but if you guys have any questions that I can answer, I’ll be happy to do so. I was actually looking for a ‘Yale Mom’ thread one of my friends told me about, but since I’m here and got accepted, I’d figure I’d offer some solace to the people that are still probably a nervous wreck! Good luck- or, if you are involved in theatre, break a leg!

@fizzy110 and @bosphorus – RD interviews have started. Assignments to volunteer alumni started immediately after the EA decisions were announced.

@bosphorus I understand, in my eyes a deferral would have been harder to deal with than an acceptance, I would hate the feeling of uncertainty and all. @isismarina congratulations on the acceptance!!! you must be ecstatic. It’s really kind that you’re willing to help us out - I have a question about the interviews - @T2E4 it would be great to have your input too if possible - does the interviewer have access to your application/background information about you before the interview? Although it will vary - what type of questions were asked to you personally/what type do you ask?

fizzy: interviewers are ONLY given contact information, name of HS, possible area of interest. Nothing else. We’re really asked to gauge the student’s depth – however the conversation goes – just please don’t answer “Prestige” if asked Why Yale. I’ve had this happen.

Have some questions ready. Tell what makes you tick – what excites you.

@T26E4 Thanks for the response! Hahah “prestige” how shallow - but I’m not surprised - it is many people’s reason for applying. I’ve heard some horror story interview’s about students being grilled about current events etc. - do you think it would be wise to read up on some things before hand?

current events are fair game. If you said you want to go into compsci and we ask about your opinion about the Sony-NK hack, I’d hope you have some familiarity with it. I’m not going to drill you on something obscure – everyone is busy – but if you profess knowledge or ambition in a field, I’d hope you have a logical thought or opinion on the subject – and the ability to see opposing sides/opinions.

I think most fair-minded adults won’t be trying to grill you or trip you. And if faced with something you don’t know, state so – but follow up and discuss something that is relevant in the news that you know something about.

What we don’t want to see are grinds whose universe is their classroom and books.

@T26E4‌ If we don’t hear about an interview, at what date would say we can assume we aren’t getting one?

@shabuwa I’ve seen interview calls go out as late as late Feb/early March – even if the deadline is Feb 15.

Im applying RD to Yale too. I got accepted into Princeton SCEA but my family wants me to apply to Yale and Harvard to compare and see what each of them are going to offer. Good Luck to all :)

Congrats @PrincPlease21!!! Would any one like to share their common app essay? I’ve had feedback for my counselor and mom but that’s it, and I’d love to read someone else’s/have some one read mine.

does anyone know the stats of percentage of deferrals getting accepted in RD? (Yale only) thanks!

If you didn’t get an interview as an SCEA applicant, is there a chance you’ll get one as a deferred applicant being considered for RD?

@Pine97 Yes, it’s possible to receive an interview as a deferred EA applicant now in the RD round.
