Yale Residence/Life/Clubs

New Haven is on the south coast of CT. NYC is about 1.5 hours away, Boston 2.5. You can pull out a map and see what the area has to offer. I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

does Yale offer some sort of “public square”? like a place where everyone else is…

There is an actual public square, the New Haven Green, right across the street from Old Campus.

Harvardlite, are you male? I’m really starting to like you. We should date.

^ Just from the way he talks, I’d bet pretty good money that harvardlite IS male :P

I thought the same thing, but you never know. I need to make sure that I’m directing my affections to the correct gender.

Lol, if not, you guys can just be bffs ;)

That is also an option.

So what do you say, HL - shall we mate for life, or just be BFFs? I promise I won’t listen to classical garbage.

I can’t believe I ever played the violin; what was I thinking?! Beatboxing is where it’s at.

NinjaWoman, we r mates4eva

and since we r on the topic of eternal love… does Yale offer any fraternity/sorority life at all or is there active clubbing?

and another question: do things at Yale cost much higher than at other places?

Ouch, portuegeseninja. I would demand a bit more love before you offer up yours  One line of his declaration of love for your whole page of posts? :P

to answer harvardlite’s question…
yes there is greek life. it’s not as huge as it is at other colleges, but it’s definitely there if you want it. there’s usually at least one frat party on the weekends. frats vary in terms of what kind of people join, but some have athletes of a specific sport (i.e. football, lacrosse). there are only three sororities. frats and sororites have a bunch of crush parties, mixers, etc. but they don’t dominate the party scene.
clubbing, eh…some organizations will rent out a club for an event (there’s one called elevate that’s probably the most popular). the clubs in new haven, though, most people don’t frequent cause they’re kinda sketchy. unless you count toad’s as a club, haha.

“I understand that Yale does not have a beautiful beach (i mean, cmon rocky beaches aint beautiful beaches)”

Yale does not have a beautiful beach, but the city of New Haven does. And it’s sandy.

http://farm3.static.■■■■■■■■■■/2435/3568338666_84e7075ed4.jpg

There’s a restored carousel:

http://3.bp.blogspot.com/_Ulug8m3jEec/SdIzdNZ6bCI/AAAAAAAABEw/G11-7SoGqkU/s320/Carousel+1.jpg

You would have to rub shoulders with the salt of the earth, though. And as a townie, when the Yalies show up, I say, “There goes the neighborhood.”

I’m a bit of a ringer. I am fortunate to live in East Rock, the Yale neighborhood, and some of my best friends are associated from me. They deign to talk to me because I have a degree from the University of Chicago.

It is only recently that Yale has come to dominate the life of New Haven. Before the decline of U.S. manufacturing, Yale was an appendage to companies such as Winchester and A.C. Gilbert.

Too many Yale students, if they think of New Haven at all, it’s with a sense of noblesse oblige or condescension.

Actually, we have a love-hate relationship with Yale. I’ll admit that it is responsible for the extent of culture and evening amusements now available, but I’m tired of Yale students saying that if it weren’t for Yale I see no reason to be in New Haven.

And Yale has nothing to do with the quality of the world-class pizza, although as a native of Brooklyn, I argue with my wife about NY v. New Haven apizza (not sic). Please keep going to Sally’s and Pepe’s, so you can stay away from the place I like that’s better.

I’ll be happy to answer any other questions about why you should like New Haven, if not Yale.

^ i sense senseless pride in New Haven of New Haven.

and since the topic of love is so enticing,

at any given time, approx wht %age of yale undergrads r dating?
and do most yale undergrads have such relationships for the intent of lifelong relationships?
and do yale undergrads usually date other yale undergrads or do they have a tendencey for other groups (yale med, new havenites, law yalies, long-distance)?

feel free to stratify undergrad yalies into frosh, sophies, junies, seniorites. and btw, i believe in arranged marriages.

[Yale Daily News - Yalies, under the covers](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/features/2010/02/08/yalies-under-covers/)

Well, then. Thank you for your post, Booklady; it was enlightening. o_O

Kind of rude, don’t you think? It was NICE of latichever to post his/her personal opinions about New Haven, and honestly, I’m excited by the beach/carousel. It looks like a really great place. Maybe we should stop believing all these perpetuated stereotypes and get off our asses to go explore the surroundings more.

Assuming of course, that you actually get in.

^ true. It wud hve been better for me if I said “misplaced” instead of “senseless”.

New Haven is worth noting on a map bc it has yale in it. It is also worth noting because it was the spectacle of the firefighter trial. It is also worth noting for the Black Panther riots in the Vietnam-fury ‘60s.

It is NOT worth noting for anything New Haven has to offer. New Haven, from my emerging perspectve, resembles a tarnished town tht successfully forces Yalies to interact amongst themselfes. It offers a ghetto tht idealistic Yalies can attempt to treat (in the name of communty service). Itz a wonderful experimental ground for testing ideas on how to improve ghettos, but thts about it.

but honestly, whtz thr to get excitd about a carousel for? And the beach, is not very beachlike, the weather is iceland,… no wonder the Puritans found a no-man’s land tht they can settle on.

HE: you’re jaded words about NH are pretty extreme considering you’ve never even been there. Why do you foist such extreme negatives when it’s obvious that one should withhold judgment? Should anyone form such strong opinions just based upon the opinions of others or just spewing from one’s one pre-conceived notions?

NH is like thousands of other American cities. It has its issues (I was at Yale during one of New Haven’s economic nadirs) but most communities do. I’m not whitewashing what NH has to do to really emerge and be great but for you, a 17 year old outsider Ivy aspirant to rant “It is NOT worth noting for anything New Haven has to offer.” – it’s mindboggling and makes one shake his head. And you wonder why people are hostile to your demonstrated level of open-mindedness?

Sheesh. April 1 can’t come fast enough.

^i am 18 yrs old, btw.

my statement was intntionlly provactve. It ws meant to generate some sort of substance to the statemnt that “New Haven offers something.”

Besides elaborately wordy lip service, I still hvnt received a single post describing the merits of New Haven aprt from Yale.

Yes, the “beach” is something,

and pardon me the carosel ring around the rosie, pocket full of posie is nothing intrsting about New Haven…I find better newer ones at the FFA county fair

harvardlite: There’s still time to withdraw your application and spare yourself the misery of spending four years in New Haven.
