Yale SCEA - Chance Me

Hello everyone :) I'm applying early to Yale and I would love to get some perspective on my chances of getting in.

A little bit about me: I go to two schools in VA: a regular public high school and a selective school for math and science, where I'm in the second year of an independent research project. I alternate between schools each day. My main interest lies in politics and government, and I tentatively plan to go to law school after college.

Essays: If I don't get in, I feel like this will be why. So my Common App is about being a failure of figure skater for eight years and learning that I need to pursue things I'm passionate about. I've been bouncing around with the Yale supplement; it may be about being an introvert who loves public speaking, or about a time I stood up to our school board, or about my love for graphic design. My big issue is that I'm not a very good storyteller, so there's a good chance that my essays will come off as weird, boring, illogical, or some combination of the three.

Recommendations: Should be okay.

Other:
Race: Chinese

Gender: Female

Income Bracket: >$200,000

Hooks (URM, first generation college, etc.): None

Thanks for any insight you can provide!

As you probably know, Yale has been building up its science (and to a lesser extent, math) reputation. So, play up the second high school and your math/science chops.

Be yourself in your essay. There’s nothing wrong with being a failed figure skater, although you might explain why it took 8 years to figure that out (j/k  ). My son’s essay did not feature him as the “hero,” but it was genuine, and he was accepted.

Doing chances for Yale is not usually helpful. You are a strong candidate, but so are many others. Good luck.

Many thanks for the advice! I know that the ‘chances’ I get on here don’t indicate much in the actual decision, so I’m really just looking for some outside perspectives of who I look like on an application. As for the figure skating, I was mediocre for about five years before starting to fall apart, then was just too stubborn to quit without something to show. Thankfully, I figured it out in the end haha.

I think you have a decent shot. Spend some time on the essay, and consult with teachers to help the essay BE you. Good luck!

Thank you! :)
