Yale SCEA Class of 2021 Discussion Thread

@londondad, it was clear to us when DD applied SCEA. She originally wanted to apply for UMiami’s full tuition merit scholarships but they require EA application. So she had to give up and not applying to UMiami since she can not apply to their scholarship/EA under Yale’s SCEA rule.

I don’t know the thread in question, but my guess is that those who disagree think that scholarship applications are an exception, as they are at Stanford. However, IMO, that exception does not exist at HYP. Regardless, if I were in the situation, I would have called Yale admissions to confirm

@IxnayBob @skieurope @AngelaD Thanks for the posts. Basically, from the other thread, the kid wrongly applied SCEA to Yale and EA to Miami this year and was accepted by Yale. Her GC (I think she goes to a private school in South Florida) advised her that this was permitted and the dad agrees with the GC. I think what happened is that the GC and the dad confused Yale’s SCEA’s rules with Stanford’s. I have followed SCEA and ED rules with my kids religiously and like @AngelaD 's child did not permit them to apply for any merit scholarships that would have required an early application.

I read some of the posts “over there,” but don’t understand the student’s, parent’s, or GC’s (!) thinking. Yale does not say anything about a scholarship exception.

There is something to be said for requiring a list of “where else you applied” after SCEA acceptance, or upon application.

ETA: let’s hope the student has virtues offsetting her reading comprehension

^ Thanks for the post. I think the GC has kids that want UM as a backup to HYP so is wrongly rationalising that action. Leave it to Floridians to come up with the latest scam! Lol! This would make a good subplot for Carl Hiassen’s next novel!

@skieurope has it right. Stanford’s SCEA/REA has an exception to the EA restriction if one is applying for a named scholarship and must apply EA for consideration (Tulane’s policy comes to mind).

Yale has no such exception.

Does anybody know how important midterm exams are to Yale? I applied as a math major and received a B on my Calc BC midterm…

I know at my school at least that midyear exam grades are not included in the midyear report

DD received a good looking T-shirt in the mail today!

Same here!

Were the t-shirt recipients applicants under early or regular decision? Congratulations!

@SkipWoosnam, DD was admitted during the early decision.

Did anyone get a Yale “Fly-In” Program email? I received it today and it says “Congratulations on being selected for a likely letter from Yale.” I googled this but I’m confused by what it means. Does this mean I’ve been “accepted”? How many people get this? I’m trying not to freak out because I don’t want to get my hopes up.

@myfuture09 If you get a likely letter you are pretty much guaranteed admission as long as you don’t majorly mess up your senior year. Congrats!

Thank you so much!!

@myfuture09 Getting a likely letter not only means you’re accepted, it means Yale really wants you to go and is trying to increase your desire to be there. Congrats!

Received my likely letter today! Super excited to join the Yale class of 2021! Best of luck to everyone out here

I’m sorry if anyone already asked this but do likely letters go out to deferred applicants?

Does anyone here know how to find the Yale regional AO contact information? Thanks a lot.

I believe all inquiries go to the central email/telephone number. Your guidance counselor may have this information if they have a good relationship with the AO, but I am sure you can appreciate the fact that the school has systems in place to handle the huge volumes of questions they get during admissions season. As an alum with a couple of kids that have gone through the process, I always felt that it was better to follow the “rules” and that parental interjection would likely do more harm than good.
