Yale Science/Engineering Supplement

I have a question about the optional Sci/Eng supplement. I have an official Intel ISEF abstract I want to submit, or a full research paper manuscript (15 pages). However, the research paper is currently in review for publication in an international, peer-reviewed, journal. Should I submit the research paper (it is currently NOT published and will NOT be published by the time I apply SCEA), or should I submit the official Intel ISEF abstract? Is there any way to submit both, and if not, which one should I submit, because the research paper is not official and published, while the ISEF abstract is? Thanks.

I would submit the official Intel ISEF abstract, and note you have an additional research paper under review for publication by XXXX (name the organization), which will not be published by the SCEA deadline. If Admissions wants to view the additional research paper, they will contact you and ask for it.

@gibby Thanks for answering my question! WHat if I put the link to my isef abstract in my additional information and sent in the 15 page manuscript in the Yale Sci Eng Supplement? Would they copy and paste the link into google and read my abstract, or not do you think.

I think “Less is more.” Remember, Admissions Officers have about 12 minutes to read a student’s application, which includes looking over their transcript, course rigor and grades, test scores, extracurricular activities, reading the Common Application Personal Statement, Supplemental Essays, Science/Engineering Supplement, reading the guidance counselor’s Secondary School Report and the two teacher recommendations and interview report. And then they have to make notes – all within that 12 minute time frame.

The more stuff you submit, the more there is a chance that an Admissions Officer will have to skim everything – meaning they will read the first paragraph and last paragraph of your essays and will do the same with each recommendation. So, in the end an Admissions Office will get a watered down view of who you are because they are skimming. So, submit accordingly.

IMHO, I would not submit a 15-page manuscript as it will never get read and just clutter your application. As I previously stated

@gibby Ok thanks so much for your help! Hopefully, they don’t only read the first and last paragraph of my essays as I’ve spent a lot of time on them. I’ll submit the ISEF abstract. Thanks so much!
