I'm really interested in applying to Yale next year, but have heard horror stories of little/no social life and pretentious students. Most of what I've read points otherwise, but is there any truth to these rumors?

Thanks!

Thanks!

As a recent alum, I can speak to this with some confidence.

The part about little/no social life is laughable. There are a handful of kids who just sit in the library all the time, but the vast majority of Yalies have very active social lives. If what you’re looking for is all frat, all the time, on the scale of, say, Ole Miss, then you’re in for a disappointment. But no matter what you’re looking for on a weekend night – big crazy frat party, a club, wine and cheese, low-key chat with friends, a show – it’s always going on. The social scene is very diverse, and the party life is actually quite democratic. By that I mean, no matter how comparatively “nerdy” or “fratty” you are, you are always welcome at parties of any and all kinds.

Sure, there are pretentious people at Yale but most aren’t like that. You’ll find pretentious kids at any university, and Yale is shockingly down-to-earth, given how competitive it is to get in.

Did those rumors about social life come from Yalies? Because I’m pretty sure any former or current Yale student will tell you that those rumors are false :)

As for pretentiousness, mochamaven summed it up perfectly. There are pretentious students at all schools, but Yale is a really chill school given the intelligence and accomplishments of the students.

My nephew ,from Calif . , just finished freshman year ,and had a GREAT time .

LOL: the people who told you the horror stories about Yale are probably secretly going to apply – and don’t want you as competition!

Thanks so much! This really helped. Do you have any good tips for a perspective applicant?
