I just got a phone call from an admissions officer saying that I'm "likely" to be admitted because of my interest in computer science. Has anyone else gotten one of these?

Congratulations! I thought this might be about the time-- my daughter received that call last year and is now a happy freshman at Yale.

Congrats! Watch your mail box for a formal “likely letter”. This is part of Yale’s campaign to aggressively recruit what it considers as top STEM applicants. Please consider it highly as Yale’s CS dept is quite notable (which I’m sure you know already). “Yale Class of 2016” How does it sound to you?

T26E4 - Are there defined majors where they are being targeted for likelies?

T26E4- Thanks for your response! Regarding your comment about the notability of Yale’s CS dept: is it? Of course, Yale being Yale, I’m sure it’s very good, but I haven’t heard very much about Yale’s computer science department specifically. Is there anything you’ve heard about Yale and CS?

^ igul222 — Sorry, Your post then begs the questions WHY did you apply to Yale if you don’t know about the CS major, and it is the major you want to pursue? Why Yale?

^ fogfog — Actually, igul222 already got in. Now it’s Yale’s turn to answer that question.

@fogfog: I researched CS and Yale quite a bit before applying, actually, but when I applied, it wasn’t because of the relative strength of Yale’s CS department. From what I’ve learned, Yale’s CS department is good, but not especially great compared to other top-tier schools. E26E4’s comment seems to suggest otherwise, though, which is why I asked. Does anyone know? T26E4?

one of my friends received this call as well from the Assistant Director of UG Admissiosn

Are all of the calls out already?

Congrats!
@soydecali I believe they keep sending out likely’s and calling till March.

igul - did they invite you to attend a STEM weekend?

As far as I know, they stop calling by early February. This seems logical; the YES (Yale Engineering and Science) weekend is on February 18th, so I wouldn’t understand why they would call potential science prospects all the way into March.

I heard that 80 science prospective applicants total received a phone call to YES-W and likely letters. The admissions portal actually shows that the applicant has been admitted to Yale, so that’s pretty interesting.

Congrats to those who received the phone call! Consider yourself lucky to be among the top science students in the world that are invited to a special session and (early) regular decision acceptance to Yale. I actually find it very good on Yale’s part to not only give advantages to hard-working athletes, but also hard-working students. Hopefully other schools can follow suit

They do send out the bulk of them in late January/early February, but some are still send in March.

Hi all, I am an alumnus of the Yale CS department, and a long-time alumni interviewer as well.

I studied there quite some time ago, and went on from Yale to a top CS department for a Ph.D. At the time, I would say that I got a very good undergrad CS education, with the possible exception of it having no requirement or even suggestion to study digital design, which proved to be 20% of the CS GRE (which I utterly flubbed :-). But I learned a lot and had great teachers, and I’m sure the same is true now.

I chose Yale over MIT despite liking CS so much going in, because I wanted a well-rounded education with lots of exposure to the humanities, and not just a focus on science.

I would say that Yale is competitive with similar schools. Some may be stronger in one subfield or another (e.g. Yale’s always been strong in artificial intelligence).

To anyone who got a likely letter for STEM,

Firstly, congrats! This is a really awesome opportunity (and probably a bit relieving too).
But I have a question: when did you all submit your applications? Was it earlier than the 12/31 deadline?

I just got one on Tuesday (1/24)
I submitted my Yale app at 8:58 Pacific Time on 12/31. Heh, whoops…

But yeah, I was really surprised they were still able to read my app and consider me for the early likely letter.
I’m really excited about visiting Yale at YES weekend. I already got into MIT, so it’ll be a really tough choice.

I’m interested in CS, which MIT seems to have more prestige in, but I’ve only heard good things about the student to faculty ratio and the ease with which students get opportunities to work with a professor and do research.

Have any potential EEs gotten likely calls yet, or is this latest round just CS? I’m an SCEA deferred and am not particularly expecting a call, but am curious just the same…

Yale84Alum: This is pretty much exactly what I was looking for. Thanks for your perspective :)

veezbo: I submitted my app around noon on Dec 30.

spinnercat: Congrats! I was equally surprised when I got the phone call. Maybe I’ll see you at YES-W!

Any electrical or biomedical engineering applicants that have been invited to YES-W yet?
