Yale Summer Abroad - Under Subscribed?

I’m a little worried that my son’s Summer Abroad might be canceled due to too few applicants!
Anyone else?

Well, given the discussion on the parents thread about the expenses, it did not surprise me to read that. I hope your son is still able to go. Since they are no longer waiving the student summer contribution, that may have decreased the number of applicants. Also, they said you could only apply to one program, but in the past you could pick two back ups. So maybe the students who did not get their first choice will fill the other programs.

Someone with more experience in economics than I may have an answer for this, but I fail to see how a dozen college kids would have a meaningful impact on the Prague economy.

@skieurope, I’m sure that you see the difference between the economy of “the people in Prague who depend heavily on it as a source of income” (probably a single digit number of people), and the larger “Prague economy.”

If the statement had read “the people of Prague,” followed by a comma, that would be a different story.

My son is a freshman and he applied not for study abroad but for internships and he was chosen for an unpaid one in Australia. He didn’t know Yale was not waiving the student summer contribution and we dedided as a family that he still should go. He’ll get some $ based on his FA, he’ll use all his savings and we’ll sacrifice and cover the rest. We see it as an investment for his future so next year he’ll have something better in his resume and hopefully get a paid one! Hopefully after his return he’ll have 5-6 weeks to make a little money

Okay. Color me completely confused about the summer programs. My son just applied for a summer program in Arles for credit. Is this separate from the programs above? The main focus of the program to which my son applied is to improve his written and spoken French so that his language skills are at a high enough level to take courses in French in Paris for the fall semester. Is this separate from the programs talked about above?

@momofmusician17 Arles is not a program run by Yale, unlike those listed above.

@skieurope I just found that program under Yale College Center for International an Professional experience and it’s ISA eligible

@Saona63 True, but it’s still not a Yale Summer Program Abroad, which offers the programs referenced by YDN.

My D has been accepted to the summer program in German which is 4 weeks in New Haven (June) and 4 weeks in Germany (July). She will get three credits = well worth it. The program is $12,000 including tuition, room, board, travel and books. The school will cover the amount equal to the percentage of financial aid she is getting and she is responsible for the rest. She is applying for a lot of grants and scholarships that she says are available. Hopefully this will bring the price down to something we can manage.

As far as her summer contribution. The money they earn for the summer is not factored into what is paid to Yale for tuition through the parent’s contribution. That stays the same. That amount, which this year I think was about $1,600 is to go toward books, travel and incidentals during the year. Of course, some kids absolutely need to earn this money over the summer to be able to return to school. Others, like mine, really don’t have to have that money since we usually take up the slack. Yes I know all kids are not in the same position, but if they are on full financial aid, then they would get the whole summer program paid for anyway.

Also, they have the months of May and August to work. Don’t know if working somewhere in June in New Haven would be an option also since they would be there for that month. Some students still may be able to cobble together their contribution even doing the summer programs. As I said on another thread, I think this is a once in a lifetime opportunity for my D and I will try my best to make it happen even if it means peanut butter and jelly sandwiches for lunch all summer.

Thanks for the explanation @skieurope!

Good news from our family, our son was accepted to a program in Prague this summer.
