Yale: the gay Ivy?

I'm going to be a Senior next year in high school. Naturally, I am exceptionally interested in attending Yale. It is my dream college, and it has been for a while. A factor that I would want to discuss is my homosexuality. How do you think this affects my chances of getting in?

Current GPA (weighted): 4.375
GPA (unweighted): 4.0
ACT: 34
AP courses: AP English Literature and AP Calculus (Only two of the three offered by my school.)
(I have never taken a foreign language class, but I am studying French in my own time.)

Extracurriculars: Newspaper/Yearbook, Drama (I had a lead role as Aladdin), DECA (international qualifier), NHS

Also, in my free time, I pour my heart into my own composed music, and I have a clothing-design website that has substantially helped me monetarily.

My question: If I elaborate on how I'm gay, and how it has affected my schooling and my outlook on political and social issues, will this increase my chances of getting accepted? I'm also interested in starting a Gay-Straight Alliance senior year. Stereotypically, Yale is the "gay Ivy," but will this be something that would be beneficial to stress in my application?

I would love to hear your honest opinion. :) I'm totally prepared for you to just tell me to give up, too. Say what you will.

There are no admissions preferences for LGBT students, if that’s what you mean. LGBT students are not exactly an underrepresented minority at Yale :stuck_out_tongue: Some random essay about how you’re gay isn’t going to help.

BUT, if your identity is super important to you, and you hope to be involved in the LGBT Co-op or something if you come to Yale, then by all means write about that in your essay. If you submit a passionate, compelling essay on your sexual orientation (just like if you submit a passionate, compelling essay about anything that matters to you) it will help you.

Thank you for the reply! I’ve already started the essay, and I’m really trying to convey my passion for the matter and how I’m allowing it to empower me, not hinder me. I’m obviously not going for originality here, but it’s what I know I’ll be able to write about and be most true to myself.

There’s no reason that I should get super stressed over this, though. Riiiiiiiigght? College is supposed to be enlightening and fun, or something.

No one who goes to college especially Yale for that matter is not going to have the time to tease you. Everyone in college (especially Yale again) is too smart and enlightened (like you said) to tease someone about being gay or anything else. And even if they do they’ll get expelled or academic probation because Yale doesn’t want to get a bad rep for having students who tease others especially who tease gays.

You’ll be okay and about the essay I say go for it if that’s what you’re really passionate about. I’m passionate about writing (creative writing) and trust that I will be writing about that. But also know that Yale will not give you preference or penalize your application because your gay. Hope that helped :)

:/ oppps sorry I read that last part wrong… You said STRESS not teased… my bad but yeah don’t get stress over it, its no big deal. You’ll have a great time at Yale, if you get in  all the best of luck

Well, thanks, good luck to you as well. I’m kind of surprised no one has told me to give up.

y would we tell u that. I mean some people on CC are a bit negative and tell people to give up hope but I never. If your really passionate about something then go for it.
