Hello CC,
I am a yale transfer hopeful and this thread is for people:
a) who would like to help transfers out
b) who are currently applying for transfer
c) who are alumni or experienced with the transfer proccess
d) none of the above and just like cc boards

lol jk, but it seems admission to yale as become more than an obsession to some of us

GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY!

chance threads are welcome but be prepared to be ignored!!!!

Hey, this is sort of a cool thread, and any response would be appreciated. I'm a freshman at Princeton, and I've become somewhat disillusioned by campus life here. The town is not student-friendly, the eating clubs are the focal point of social life, and the 'residential college' that I live in is completely meaningless (as any source of community here) and my dorm is isolated. In summary, I'm finding it difficult to love Princeton at certain times. That said, there are things about this school that I love.. just not completely. I often wonder if I want to spend the next four years of my life here.

A straight up, compulsory question: what were your stats? If I have a A- to B+ average here, do I stand a chance? And, perhaps more importantly, do I want to stand a chance? Where did you transfer from? Is the transition and new social life awkward? Have I jumped the gun on writing off Princeton? I'm kind of a lost soul...

Okay, enough depressing stuff. It's a Saturday, so I'm off to the Street, I guess..

Yale is my dream. I can't say enough about it. Truly and honestly is more than a school to me and I will do anything to get there. I know a lot of people on this site say that about a lot of schools, but for me it's the real deal and it is from my heart. I am a frosh at NYU and I will have a 3.6 plus after this semester. I am here to support everybody because I know how devastating it is to be rejected. Good luck and I just hope in some way or another it works out for everyone

Moodathis, my dad hated, hated, hated P-ton his freshman year and was seriously considering a transfer to Stanford. He ended up taking a semester abroad and, coming back in the 2nd semester of his soph year, he really found a niche and ended up loving it. I would say you shouldn't be so quick to give up on Princeton, it's an amazing school loved by many and chances are your feelings of isolation are pretty common for freshmen.

I guess you guys are sort of right. The thing is, the lack of freshman dorms at Princeton is just killing me, because I live in a very isolated entryway so it is hard to meet people, and as a Freshman engineer I am taking all intro classes, and they sort of suck. I don't hate it here, it just hasn't been perfect, and many of my friends here love it... so I feel that it is natural for me to wonder if I am in the right place.

The thing about Yale is that it seems like a more genuine college experience. Princeton (the town) is not very student friendly, and Princeton can be so goddamn quiet it is maddening. But at the same time, as a Princetonian, I hate Yale to no end (I don't think I could ever have the school spirit at Yale that I have here, and I might miss that aspect of Princeton should I end up transferring). I'm just a whiner, I guess..

I am also aspiring to transfer to Yale. Although I am a freshman at a Canadian university, so I guess my chances are razor-thin compared to domestic applicants!!!

yeah so is that just 6 of us applying for transfer... AWESOME lol
i wish everyone all the luck in the world but at this stage none of you guys really need it... since you guys are already spectacular apps

My D entered Y as a soph transfer this fall. Good luck to all of this year's transfer applicants, it's a long haul until mid-May, hang in there!

Elee0118 I second that, hopefully its just us lol.

entomom, Congratulations on your daughter being admitted as a transfer. Truly a remarkable accomplishment. If I may ask, how did she go about answering the "Why do you want to come to Yale" question?

As I recall, she talked about the residential colleges because as a transfer she thought it would help socially to be at a school where most students stayed with the same group of people on campus all four years. She also liked the fact that several of the RCs have printing presses in their basements, as she is interested in typology and printmaking.

She discussed specific programs/courses that interested her, such as their CW workshops that are available to all students. And she liked the fact that there were many opportunities to do community service in the greater NH area.

There are so many interesting classes/activities/programs, etc. going on at Y, I recommend you comb through their website for areas that you're interested in, you're sure to find unique things that you can talk about.

Don't know if you are all aware, but the transfer app. for fall '09 is now available just discovered it in the transfer portion of the admissions website in the how to apply section. Good luck to everyone and hopefully something good will turn out for everyone!!!!

If you think it will help your application, submit it. Yale makes it apparent on its website that many students have gotten in without submitting the supplements, so if you're really good, then submit it.

I posted this on a thread on the Transfer Students forum, but though that it might be helpful here on the Yale board. I asked my D, a fall 2008 soph transfer for her observations on the make-up of the transfer class, these are her comments:

There is a large representation from top public universities.

Those from privates range from relatively obscure colleges to military academies to top ranked universities.

There are more jr transfers than soph transfers.

Most of the soph transfers were competitive applicants to Y as fr. By "competitive applicants" I mean that they were accepted, waitlisted or accepted to an equivalent level school.

Fewer of the jrs would have been competitive applicants to Y as fr.

There were NO CC transfers (she knows one from the year before, but there were none in the fall 2008 group).

I was wondering what are my chances as a transfer to Yale. Can anyone who has transferred or who is knowledgeable about Yale help me out?

Bright side: Completely focused now that I'm at college and realized that I needed to work harder.

SahilMehta2012 - Wow, as I was reading your stats, I realized how similar mine were. We have the exact same SAT Reasoning haha. Are you Indian from India, or Native American? I'm sorry to say, but that would make a huge difference. As a chinese-american, I understand the grim reality of negative affirmative action, because of the over-represented population of my ethnicity in higher-tier schools.

I'm also applying as a transfer to Yale this cycle, and I currently attend the University of Florida. I'm looking for some suggestions for the transfer application essays from accepted Yale transfers, because apparently these make all the difference in the admissions process.

I'm banking on my 4.0/4.0 from high school and 4.0/4.0 from college to get me through, and I DO have legitimately compelling academic reasons to attend Yale, specifically. However, I'm nervous about the strength of my professor recommendations, because it's been difficult to get to know them as a freshman.

*btw - Thanks Entomom for the great posts and helpful advice from your daughter. Did Yale match her financial need?? Money is also a concern for me.

Yes, my D has WS and grants that meet her need. But remember, the college determines need, so it's not always the same thing that you/your parents think you need. The two bright spots for FA are that this year Y improved their FA policy for upper middle income families and they give transfers the same FA as they do freshman admits.

I have a question regarding credits and all that.

Does Yale transfer a lot of credits from your previous college or do they tend to be picky? Say I take 2 years at my current state college and then apply as a transfer. Technically I'd be transferring as a junior, but should I except to be a junior at Yale if accepted? Let's say they only accept half of my credits, then would I enter as a sophomore? Entering as sophomore wouldn't bother me, but it would be nice to know if advance where I would be if I ended up applying. I hope what I said makes sense....
