Do I have a chance?
URM- Rwandian/ Burundian
Is there any Burundian here on CC or at Yale?
I am looking for publishing agent for my major...

Bk,
I would say you do have a chance, but then again it really is a crapshoot. Being burundian is not going to make a difference because Y doesnt ask for that I dont think. I would make sure you have have solid essays and being URM will probably help. I think Y is in dire need of them. By PSU I am assuming Penn State? In your essay I would elaborate on your African heritage and include some of your extracurricular ctivities if you can.

BK91: Are you currently a Junior? You can't trnsfr in as a Senior. Only incoming Soph and Jrs.

I would like to submit that there was at least one transfer from a CC in the fall of '08 - our very own Frrrph.

That being said, I am a CC'er applying as an Eli Whitney Student!

^^^frrrph transferred to Y in the fall of 2007, not 2008.

However, there may very well be a CC transfer in the fall 2008 group as (after my post) I recall seeing a post by MagiTF saying that he knew a CC transfer from this fall.

Here it is:

Does Yale transfer grades as well as credits or just the credits?

I know some colleges only take the credits from your previous college, but I wasn't sure about Yale...

That's a good question, I think gpa is separate for different schools, but I'm not positive.

It's pretty hard to mix different grading systems. My D recently needed to figure a cumulative gpa for applying to a summer program. Her old school was typical in assigning the number of units based on how much time the class took, rather than Ys equal single units for each class, so about the only thing she could do was calculate a close estimate.

That's true. I just searched around a bit and found out on the website that they don't transfer grades. They do look at the grades in terms of how to evaluate if you get the credit or not ( a B or better I believe) but they don't transfer the actual grade, like they do the credit.

According to the Undergraduate Transfer Program at Yale:

Yale College receives between 700 and 800 transfer applications, and admits between 24 to 35 candidates per year, reflecting an admissions rate of only 3% to 5%.

"Brenzel said Yale accepts few transfer students because the school’s residential life is founded on the freshman and sophomore experience, and Yale wants to maximize the number of undergraduates who can take advantage of a full four-year enrollment. The residential college system also limits the amount of housing available."

Yale Daily News - Harvard says it will accept fewer transfer students

Just some facts...

Some are old (and incorrect) facts. Your link to the article about H transfers is from 2007 and as of 2008, H stated that it would accept NO transfers for at least 2 years. Unfortunately for students applying for fall 2008 transfers, H didn't make it's decision until AFTER the application deadline. Bad show by H seeing as their supplement was extensive, requiring several additional essays, and they gave no refund on the cost of sending the CSS Profile.

thanks. this makes me more optimistic. i'm at the "#1 public university in the us" as ranked by us world news ::gag:: whatever that means. haha. but yea. i was really worried because i always thought private schools preferred other private schools and that public school students were at a disadvantage.

Since when is the #1 public U in SoCal ;)?? Just kidding, you'll be happy to know that at least one transfer from last year attended the #1 public U located in northern CA.

haha. i live in socal and go to school in norcal. i don't know if this is too private, but what school did your daughter transfer from? if that is too personal, maybe you could tell us what kind of school your daughter transferred from (big, small, liberal arts, etc.)

Ha, so did I many years ago, from the San Fernando Valley to Cal. My D transferred from a top Public U in the midwest.

Applying for junior entry. How much emphasis is put on hs transcript and sat scores? How important is the reason for transfer? thanks

that is so cool entomom. what did you study at cal?

qwertychester, as a junior transfer they still look at your hs materials but not as much as they would if you were a sophmore. saying that, your college transcripts so far have a pretty big weight. and the reason of transfer is one of the most important things.

Physical Anthropology, but I wasn't ready to jump straight into a PhD program (really no other career route for Anthro) and ended up heading in a different direction.

Hey all,

I'm a sophmore at U of T in Canada, I'm applying to Yale this year but I'm so nervous. It's one serious long shot. There was a truly lovely lady who helped me out in the admission office, she kinda talked me into trying. I've had a really weird acedemic carer. I've always wanted Yale but to even get into university I need to pay my own way through. I had three jobs and my marks were poor. Recently I came into money and last year my marks jumped from a 1.6 to a solid 4.0 with SAT total of 2220 (790 W, 740 CR, 690 M) and 32 on my test subjects.

I told the admission office this and they said I should apply and tell them about my situation in my personal essays. Here's hoping, best of luck to all of you!
