interesting, best of luck to you :)

Hey does anyone know how/when we get the decision? I know they say that they will tell us in mid-May but is that regular mail or email also? Is it possible that they make the decisions earlier than that?

Hello
I had a quick question. I have been reading couple of posts that forum members have posted regarding their "stats." Honestly, they are quite impressive! However, I can't help but ask the century old question; among all these qualified candidates and their above average resume's, how does the Yale committee decide who to accept and who to defer? I mean, I have heard some stories that chroncile the lives of avergae teenagers that turn their lives around once they get to college and end up at Yale. But why would Yale pick a student like them or me compared to people, quite frankly, like the ones on this forum? How is that someone that seems on the surface to have no chance end up getting in?

tweety,
I can’t remember the exact date, but last year is was about May 15th. They did however extend the deadline for transfer applications last year, I don’t know if that affected the decision date or not.

Thanks entomom…do u knw if there is a chance tht they might send out decisions before May or is it most likely in May? Also, do they email the decision or not?

Before May would be pretty early, but you never know. Yes, they email decisions.

hi
I’m also a Yale transfer applicant this year. I’m hoping to get in as a Soph. I’m worried about something. Do you think that my age would affect my chances of Getting into Yale? Here’s my stats:

Interested major: Political science
Race: African-American (born in Nigeria)
Age: 16, 17 in June
H.S GPA: 3.99
College G.PA: 3.83, 2nd semester Freshman
ACT: 26, 12 in Writing
Credits: 36 credits by the end of this semester
Classes: 6 classes (most of them are 200 level)
Jobs: I have 1 job
Reason for transferring: I don’t hate my current school, my parents want me to become a doctor, but I want to become a lawyer. The only way that my parents would support my decision is if I study law at Yale, If don’t, I’ll become a depressed doctor, who hates repetition for the rest of his life.
Qualities: High school class president, College Mock Trial Team captain, President of Political Science club, advocate of community service, and proposer of making Chicago Public Schools run under green standards, and so much more.
Personal Qualities: I never give up.
Relatives who had been at Yale: Step-grandma; Claudia Tate, professor @ Yale of African-American studies. Henry Gates; he is like my step uncle.

Please tell me what u think.

^^
entomom,
do they just email the accepted decisions while mail the rej decisions? I know the question is weird but that rule seems apply to some colleges. And you might dont know cuz your D got accepted! transfer from midwest top public u here lol!

I just checked last year’s transfer results thread:

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/transfer-students/503123-2008-official-transfer-results-6.html?highlight=2008+transfer+results

There’s a member who posted on 5/15 of last year that they were reject from Y, so I think that they do send out positive and negative results by email or else they would not have known their answer so soon.

Best of luck to public school kids (and everyone else too) ;)!

TA,
I think your ACT score will affect you more than your age, unless you’re low SES or disadvantaged. I don’t quite get your parent’s concern about only going to law school if it’s at Y…this is only undergrad.

Thanks for replying entomom.

My parents want me to take medical related courses in college, like Biology, but I’m interested in Political Science and Philosophy. They will accept me taking the classes of my choice if I take them at Yale. Is that a good enough reason to apply to Yale?

Sincerely,
TransferAccepted

I think I get it, the only way your parents will let you major in whatever you like is if you do premed coursework at Y. That’s really unfortunate, particularly since you like your current school. While it might be a good enough reason for you and your parents, I doubt it’s going to go very far with the Y adcoms, so I’m assuming that you wrote something else in your essay??

Do your parents realize that you can take courses to satisfy Med school requirements almost ANYWHERE, and that you can at the same time major in ANYTHING (science or non-science) and still have the same chance of getting into Med school? You actually might do better not at Y since maintaining a high gpa is so important for Med school admissions.

I’m sorry entomom. I think I misled you a bit. My parents want me to take pre-med coursework at my current school. I want to take pre-law coursework, but they don’t think that it is wise to take pre-law coursework at my current school. The only way they would let me take pre-law coursework is if I take it at Yale. So in essence, If I want to go to Law School, I have to take pre-law coursework at Yale

First, there is no such thing as “pre-law” coursework. You can major in anything, take any classes, and apply to law school. Law school has no requirements other than an undergrad degree. I must be incredibly dense today because if your parents are OK with you doing premed at your current school, I don’t see why you can’t just take premed requirements and major in something you like. Of course there’s always the question of do you apply to Med or Law school further down the line, but maybe by then you’ll be independent enough to do it on your own.

Hi entomom

Thanks for replying again. I guess I have an interest for for courses in the humanities–Political Science and Philosophy. I have already taken enough Biology, Chemistry, and Physics classes. I want to study something that I actually enjoy, something that captivates my enthusiasm. My current school is underfunded in Political science and philosophy. The professors are habitually absent. The classes are extremely crowded (70-1 student to faculty ratio). My parents don’t want me to go to Law School, but to Med School. They told me that they would let me choose whichever career path I want (become a lawyer) if I do it at Yale. Their conception of the issue is that I don’t have a say in the matter. My mom actually said that she wouldn’t support me in taking classes in the humanities that I like at my current school, but will if I am able to take them at Yale. If I’m ever going to go to Law school, I have to convince my parents that it is a very promising venture that I will enjoy. All this begins by getting admitted to Yale.

Thank you for being so kind Entomom

Sincerely,
TransferAccepted

transfer accepted, i don’t want to come off as mean, but at some point we all realize nothing works out exactly the way we want, and developing a bit of flexibility is a good thing. i don’t think yale will see your reason to transfer as compelling. you bring a lot of REALLY REALLY AMAZING qualities to yale in your application and your intellect/stats are pretty top-notch, but your reasoning is jejune. yale might accept you, but the way i see it, your reason for transferring is a weakness, because it is A) driven by parental control and not by some inner drive to show why yale is a good fit for you beyond that factor and B) the narrow minded-ness of majors and careers, which is difficult to explain, but comes out to something like this…college is an amazing experience in self-exploration. you develop different passions and interests by challenging yourself and taking a wide array of courses. a lot of people (the majority) change their majors before they graduate, and a lot of people take a random class for a requirement and end up falling in love with that subject. you will never know what else you might be inspired by until you try it. that being said, you probably stand a great chance of getting into yale (certainly more than myself) and you should not stress out about the little things. ENJOY college regardless. if your parents love you, they will come around to seeing your perspective and your passion in law will rub off :)

p.s. i almost majored in fine arts and my parents had a field day with the idea of an expensive education going toward becoming a future starving artist… but hey you gotta do what you love…

btw i am calling yale today to see if i can send a midterm progress report…it’s very crude…(well originally a penn form, but i copied and pasted so you can’t tell)…it’s basically a sheet of paper listing all my courses right now (spring semester). i went around to all my classes and got my profs to record my “grade to date” with midterms done, and then they signed and dated it…maybe my continued A- thru A+ grades will help my chances?

^That sounds like a brilliant idea SC. I’d be interested to see what they think

Wow. This is amazing. This is what I expect a Yale transfer thread to be. You all sound inspiring. Let’s keep it that way. Keep it in your minds that admission into any school is possible if you don’t give up. You guys are extremely helpful. I hope we all get into Yale. I also think that sending a midterm progress report is a great idea. I look forward to hearing from You all again.

It’s been a pleasure so far.

Sincerely,
tRANSFER ACCEPTED

haha i called several times today during their office hours, and got the voice mail for the woman in charge of transfer admissions. ::shrugs:: i mailed it in today anyways…

Hey did u guys write about your ECs and send it with your application?I didn’t because Yale doesn’t ask for them on the app…I did mention one activity in my essay though…what do u guys say? Should I have attached a list or not?
