YALE transfers: Aid policy for intls?

Does Yale have a need blind admisions policy for international transfer applicants too?

Yes, it is one of the few universities that does. Financial aid is awarded solely on the basis of demonstrated need. That said, they admit about 4 transfers each year.

4…wow…i’m in for sure ^_^

Do you know of any other uni with a similar policy?
Thanks!!

claire06 do you mean they admit 4 international transfers overall or 4 international transfers who request financial aid ?

and btw what other colleges offer need blind aid
i know princeton is one

princeton doesn’t take transfers.

i know. just saying that they have need blind policy

oh. then yeah lol. sorry, i didn’t mean to sound mean

Yale typically admits <10 transfers in total. I think last year they admitted 4. Not sure if any of those 4 people were internationals. Not sure whether they requested aid or not but Yale professes to be need blind to all applicants.
Ivy League transfers are notoriously competitive. Cornell and UPenn probably admit the most of transfers any of the Ivy League schools, typically 100-200 students total, BUT they get over 2000 applications so the admit rate is still about 3-5% overall.
I think Yale transfer acceptances are so small because they have such a high retention rate thus not much space for transfers. It makes sense. Not many people want to leave Yale once they’re in! It was for this very reason that Harvard (and I think Princeton) stopped admitting transfers- there simply wasn’t room.
Other schools that are need blind for international transfers are Dartmouth, Amherst and Middlebury (to an extent). Stanford, UPenn, Cornell, Brown are need sensitive to international transfers, but will give aid.
Most US schools do not offer any aid to international transfers. Williams is need blind for international freshmen applicants, but NOT international transfers.

^ Okay, thanks a lot!! (:

Actually, Yale takes about 25-30 transfers per year from about 700-900 applicants.

Here are their stats from last year:

Yale 2007-08 Common Data Set
http://www.yale.edu/oir/cds.pdf

Transfer Applicants: 775
Transfer Admits: 28 (3.61%)
Transfers Enrolled: 23

Dartmouth, Brown, and Columbia usually have transfer acceptance rates around ~5-10% (you can check Dartmouth and Brown’s Common Data Sets to confirm this, Columbia doesn’t publish this information exactly, they just approximate numbers).

As for Penn and Cornell: Penn claims they admit around the same percentage of transfers as freshman (they, like Columbia, don’t publish exact numbers), so that would mean they admit ~12-15%. Cornell transfers vary greatly depending on what school you apply to. While Cornell does publish this information with exact numbers, many of these numbers will seem very strange (like a 62% acceptance rate to the ILR school) because of “Guaranteed Transfers” from freshman admissions.

^
I have a question. the CDS shows that Yale admits transfer candidates as the following stats:
Male: 379(15)
Female: 372(9)
Well, the amount the male and female applicants are almost the same, but they picked more male applicants. Usually most of the schools stats shows they admit the equivalent amount of the male and female students(except single sex collegs).
what do you people think of that? or maybe gender expectation is the in the consideration of Yale Admission process? could we assume maybe ethnicity is not in it either? And the admission is pure adademic & ECs & potential picking?

It is possible that there were more male students that transferred out of Yale.

gosh… williams dont admit intl transfer students~~~

Thanks Jeydomz for clarifying those stats. I actually found them on the Yale website after I had said that they admit less than 10. Still, the admit rate is horribly low :frowning:
Yes, Williams doesn’t admit international transfers. Not sure why really. Seems they are one of the few schools that have this policy. I guess they hate reading international transcripts etc.
I would have applied there if I could have!
