Collegealum314,
Influenza can be very dangerous in young adults, not just the very old and very young. From one of last year’s CDC influenza reports:

This is why I hate when people call small viruses or a common cold “the flu”. The real flu feels like death and if you’ve ever had it, you’ll never call an upset stomach the flu again.

I wish it was only a bad weekend with the flu. I caught the swine flu several years ago in my late 30’s and was very ill for over a week. Caught the flu two years ago in my early 40’s and was extremely ill for about 3 weeks and lost over 10 pounds! I am otherwise a very healthy person. After that bought two years ago I understood how it could kill.

Yeah, the last time I had the flu I lay on top of my bed fully dressed for three days before I could summon the energy to
get undressed, put on a nightgown, and get into bed.

Food poisoning and the flu are both very wretched. I am glad that for me, Tamiflu has been a wonder drug and made it much easier to continue to function and REALLY cut short three times when I was just starting the flu so it wouldn’t set off my chronic health issues as well.

I remember once when our entire family had the flu and none of us could summon the strength to prepare meals or do much other than lie down where we were and wait for it to pass–took about a week. It was just before the holidays and the kids were very unhappy that we had no tree. I finally recovered first and rushed out to buy whatever I could–turned out to be an artificial tree which the kids sniffed at but it made our house more festive (wouldn’t have had anything otherwise).

I was the one who said I was more worried about the flu than Ebola, and it was more because I’ve had the flu once, and as others have said, it is completely debilitating. She is a senior, taking five classes, writing a thesis, and trying to figure out what she wants to do when she graduates. To put it mildly, I don’t think the flu would be a good thing to add to the mix. Not to discount that it can also be a serious disease in its own right.
