Yale University Class of 2024 SCEA Decision Result

I noticed this thread hasn’t been started yet so I thought I would. It seems like it’s been a tradition to create this thread for at least the past few years, and it also could be a good resource for future applicants.

Essays (rating 1-10, details):

Won’t rate, since I’m a writer. Personal statement was about why I do what I do in politics—very detailed, got it reviewed by williamthereader on Reddit and he said he liked it. Supplements were good, could have been quirkier, maybe? Wrote about everything from authoritarianism to Rupi Kaur to baking.

Recommendations (rating 1-10, details):

Teacher Rec #1: No clue—waived FERPA—but should have been very strong.
Teacher Rec #2: Same as above
Counselor Rec: 10/10, and I won’t say that lightly. I went to see her today, and she said that she was genuinely angry about my deferral and read over everything I submitted again.
Additional Rec: 10/10, from the assemblyman—said I did work far beyond that expected of a high schooler
Interview: No clue, but it went well. We didn’t connect too much, but it was a good conversation!

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yes, but won’t get it
Intended Major: Global Affairs/EPE/Political Science
State (if domestic applicant): NJ
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, competitive
Ethnicity: Asian
Gender: Female
Income Bracket: 150k+
Hooks (URM, first-generation college, Questbridge, etc.): None!

Reflection

Strengths: My stats were obviously fine, and my ECs were good too. I’m a writer—I hate almost everything I write after a while—but my essays should have been fine, and my recs were good.
Weaknesses: Interview was kind of awkward? Could have been quirkier?
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Not FGLI/legacy/etc., so no hooks at all. No institutional benefit to them taking me.
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Unconditional offers from King’s College London and St. Andrews, waiting on a BUNCH of other schools from Vassar to WashU to CMC

General Comments: Oh well! Didn’t expect to get accepted SCEA—hoping for the best in RD, though I know it’s unlikely. My second choice is Georgetown SFS, with my third being Claremont McKenna, and my supplements are all done, so it’s just time for more waiting! Crossing my fingers for everyone who got deferred. <3

[asize=4][acolor=#008000]Decision: Accepted

Objective:
SAT I (breakdown): Took twice; Attempt #1 was a 1470 (730 EBRW, 740 Math), Attempt #2 was a 1550 (780 EBRW, 770 Math)
ACT (breakdown): Did not take
SAT II: Literature (780) (I also took US History (710) and Biology E (700) but did not submit either)
Unweighted GPA (out of 4.0): 4.00 (BUT my school considers A minuses as 4.0 rather than 3.7. I got a few A- grades so counting A- as 3.7 my GPA is probably something around 3.97)
Rank (percentile if rank is unavailable): 1st out of roughly 600
AP (place score in parenthesis):

  • Freshman Year: Human Geography (5)
  • Sophomore Year: World History (5), Environmental Science (5)
  • Junior Year: US History (5), Psychology (5), Calculus AB (5), Biology (5), English Language and Comp (5),
IB (place score in parenthesis): School doesn’t offer IB
Senior Year Course Load: AP Chemistry, AP English Literature, AP Calculus BC, AP Seminar, AP US Government, AP Macroeconomics

Major Awards (USAMO, Intel etc.): Some pretty decent stuff but nothing massive; on my application I put that I was a finalist (Top 15 in the state of California) for a speech contest, I was the school-wide Student of the Quarter, placed 3rd in the state for Odyssey of the Mind, National AP Scholar, and a departmental award in science.

Subjective:

Extracurriculars (place leadership in parenthesis):

  1. Black Student Union (9 - 12, President)
  2. Telluride Association Sophomore Seminar
  3. Class President (11, 12)
  4. Write / Founding Member for an international, social-justice based, youth-run news source with over 5,000 unique readers
  5. March for Our Lives Chapter (12, Co-Founder/Vice President)
  6. Legislative Intern for State Assemblyman (11, 12)
  7. Student Representative on multiple school boards; helped to enact numerous programs for students (10 - 12)
  8. Secretary for National Honor Society (10 - 12)
  9. Work pretty easy hours at a tutoring center (12)
  10. I play Alto Saxophone pretty recreationally (9 - 12)

Essays:

I thought my Common App essay was pretty meh. I talked about the place I grew up in and how I was initially a little embarrassed by my small town, but then grew to love it once I realized how my own personality was embedded in the town.

Supplements were much better IMO. Had a very unique structure for my “Why Yale” essay, I thought my “Intellectual Idea” supplement very clearly highlighted my passion for ethnic studies and my commitment to activism, and my short takes were pretty interesting (I wrote about everything from Kendrick Lamar to Game of Thrones). Overall I think these saved my application.

Recommendations: I didn’t read any of my recommendations so I’m not going to make any speculations. I asked my APUSH teacher (who said she wrote me the best letter she could) and my AP English teacher. Counselor was new this year so she didn’t know me well, but she said she wrote a positive recommendation.

Interview: I thought it went decently but not amazingly in any way. However, he did tell me (after I was admitted) that he recommended that the Admissions Committee admit me, so I guess he thought it went better than I did.

Other

Applied for Financial Aid?: Yessir
Intended Major: African-American Studies
State (if domestic applicant): California
Country (if international applicant):
School Type: Public, semi-competitive but pretty average (average SAT is about 1150)
Ethnicity: African-American
Gender: Male
Income Bracket: $150,000 - $200,000
Hooks (URM, first-generation college, Questbridge, etc.): URM, single-parent, 1st gen American

Reflection

Strengths: SUPPLEMENTAL ESSAYS (really emphasized what I was passionate about and what role I would play on campus), GPA/Class rank, leadership in ECs and in school community overall
Weaknesses: Common App essay, English teacher rec was probably pretty generic, some pretty good ECs and awards but nothing to completely blow someone away.
Why you think you were accepted/deferred/rejected: Very clear passions/interests (ethnic studies, social justice, etc.), strong academics, supplemental essays conveyed my personality well and I believe they made me more three-dimensional
Where else were you accepted/deferred/rejected: Nowhere else yet

General Comments: I’m over the moon right now! I never expected this in a million years and even last week you could not have convinced me that I would be accepted to my dream school!

To anyone reading this who has not applied yet – WORK ON THOSE ESSAYS! Do everything you can to make sure they portray your personality, what you’re passionate about, why you’re passionate about it, and what you will do on campus. Best of luck to RD applicants and those who were deferred. Go Bulldogs!
