Yale University Early Action for Fall 2023 Admission

My son got an email from his alumni interviewer on Nov 18. There was problem with scheduling since we were going out of state M-F for Thanksgiving, and the interviewer was busy the weekend before and after. My son offered to do virtual from his grandmother’s house and then followed up Friday morning confirming his availability for Sunday and this week, but he has received no reply.

My daughter also ended up having a virtual interview since that was the interviewer’s preference- it worked out well and no technical issues.

I’m just wondering what happens if the interviewer ghosts us and the interview doesn’t happen.

You inform admissions. If they can schedule a new interview, they will. If not, they’ll still be able to base a decision on the information available to them in the file.

Hey! I’m also from the Ontario GTA region and haven’t received an interview request yet either, so I think it’s a region thing atm

Oh nice! According to Yale’s ASC interview guide, all interview reports are due December 1, 2022 for this year’s SCEA applicants so we prob won’t be interviewed for SCEA at least it seems like… my friend who’s also in the GTA got an interview for Upenn ED so I think it’s a yale thing

In their podcast they said that for regular admissions committee meets twice a day for six weeks. So they probably need 7-9 days of committee meetings for the rea applications, followed by 1-2 days of cleanup and final review and then they double check all applications- maybe 2 more days…. So it makes sense that they want interviews by December first. But I bet that it’s not a hard deadline. They did mention in their podcast that if they’re waiting on something they want to look at before voting that they would hold off and address the application again on clean up day. So I bet there is time to get interviews done that perhaps couldn’t get scheduled last week.

We live in Ontario, and my daughter had her virtual interview this past weekend. They contacted her Nov 20th. It was a fairly standard set of questions ( Tell me about yourself, what do you do outside of school, what do you do for fun, etc) . The interviewer was kind and good with nervous kids : )

But as someone who has done interviews myself, I note that the second deadline of Dec 8 is still out there, so if your interviewer is just slow about scheduling do not despair—- all of us have busy lives so it’s still possible that they will get in touch this week or next.

Good luck to everyone!

Yes, I heard about the Dec 8th deadline as well - Interviewers who received their assignments before Nov 20th have to submit reports by Dec 1st and interviewers who received their assignments after Nov 20th have to submit reports by Dec 8th. Thank you. Good luck to everyone.

Nice!! I hope that interview went well

Is it necessary to send an update in this scenario?

DD was selected in a program, sponsored by the US Dept of State this past summer. She mentioned that in her awards/honors section. But while elaborating that in the “Additional Information” section, she said US Dept of ‘Education’ instead of ‘State’. Should she send an update to Yale/other schools to correct it? She’s worked with State Dept of Education in the past, so it was just an honest mistake. Please advise. Thanks.

I don’t think so. It’s really similar and Yale will know what she meant. I did some research on this as my son made a typo (he repeated two words) in one of his essays; the general consensus was that it is OK to make one or two errors

What states are included in my “region”? I’m from Illinois

I’m not sure if states are grouped into larger regions, but I think that AOs are assigned to regions with multiple states that AOs read. (My assumption is based on the below data and the Yale Admissions Podcast)

Here is the number of students at Yale from the state of Illinois in the past 12 years:

Note: The number of admitted students may be higher since these are enrolled students.
