Yale University interview

I just got an offer to interview with a Yale alumnus and was wondering if it’s a good or bad sign to get an interview as an international student (in Australia). Do all international applicants get interviews? Also, any tips for preparing?

I too received an interview offer from a Yale alumnus (I’m Taiwanese). I don’t think it means anything to be honest, though my Duke interviewer has hinted that not all applicants get an interview. Think of it as an opportunity to directly communicate with the adcom and nothing more for now

Thanks @jamieevren1210 good luck for yours!

It doesn’t mean anything; it literally depends on when you submitted your application, whether there are enough interviewers in your area, etc. If you applied RD and were contacted around this time, the stats are that your application has not yet been reviewed (except for your address and whether it’s complete, ofc).

However, good luck! I applied Yale SCEA (deferral; very surprising, Yale is way out of my league and I expected an immediate rejection) and interviewed through skype. The alum was really nice, loved his alma mater and had lots of tips for college applications, etc. My advice is- think about the most typical interview questions (Why Yale? What are you most proud of? Tell me about yourself. How do you contribute to your community? What inspires you?) beforehand and be prepared for possible follow up questions (eg. I am LGBTQ+ activist, organize Prides, queer events, etc and my interviewer asked me in what way I would implement my experiences in Yale environment, make fellow queers feel welcome, etc. Very specific and had I not been aware about Yale’s gay clubs, events and its gay friendly policy, I wouldn’t be able to answer is properly.). Also think about what you want to ask the alum- they are generally great and very successful people with a lot of experience who just want to help, and they have a lot to share, so enjoy conversing with them, because even if you don’t get in, that interview will probably stay with you for a long time and you might even get a new acquaintance/friend (eg. I am actually actively emailing with my MIT (second reach that literally changed my life) interviewer even three months after the actual interview, because we just clicked in a way and he helped me a lot- so don’t pass on opportunity like that).

Thanks for the detailed answer @leksihoney!!! I’ll keep those tips in mind
