WritersBlues, someone can correct me if I’m wrong, but I think the reported crimes in Campus Residences are a subset of crimes on Campus, so you don’t add them together. Thus, for example, the number of burglaries in total is 38, with 27 occurring in residences.

New Haven is a urban environment, with all the good and bad that comes with it. You need to take precautions in any such environment such as not walking around alone at night, etc. If you are from a big city such as NY, Boston, DC, Baltimore, etc., New Haven will seem very non-threatening. If you are from a rural environment or a very small town, it may be a little more iffy.

I remember at my tour over 35 years ago, one of the moms was concerned about the amount of traffic the students had to deal with going from place to place on campus. Being from Washington, DC, I remember my mom and I just looking at each other and shaking our heads.

Yale has the usual safety procedures: blue light system, transport after dark, keyed entry into residential colleges and buildings. Be aware and be safe is the motto, but that should be the case where ever you attend college or just in your everyday life.

^Having lived very close to Cambridge, MA for 3 years, I can tell all doubters that Harvard’s surrounding area isn’t incredible either. Cambridge is largely a dump, and has been crime-ridden for a while. Boston itself bails the city out, though.

I live 20 minutes away from New Haven and am there quite often for events and concerts and such. It’s known to be…not the safest city but when I am there I feel comfortable. Yale’s campus itself seems to be very secure and I, personally, would say it isn’t something to worry about. New Haven is like any other city.

My wife was recently researching a vacation for our family, and told me that she had found a few murders near the location. I reminded her that someone was just murdered in a nearby shopping mall for his Range Rover; as it happens, he was more likely defending his wife rather than the car during a carjacking. The question is not whether crime ever happens somewhere, but how prevalent it is and how avoidable it is if one is smart about what one does where and when.

That’s not to say that I would vacation (or have my child attend school) everywhere without a care in the world, but I am careful not to exaggerate based on particular (and news-worthy) events.

If you take a few precautions, it is safe. Yale has this great evening shuttle service and will pick you up from any location within the central region or drop you anywhere within the region for free. Just a phone call away! We really liked the New Haven area when we visited. If you stay in the central area you will be fine.

@LittleBookOwl I live in new haven county. My father went to Yale so I know the area very very well. Yale is located in I believe the SAFEST part of new haven. Every time I’m in new haven I feel the safest on or around the Yale campus. The middle of the city, which is where Yale is tends to be the safest part of new haven. Once you start wandering off into the outskirts of new haven you might run into some trouble. But if you stay on and around the campus you should be fine. And of course there are Yale police and city police to keep students safe

it feels very safe on campus. helps that I’m a tall male, but I’ve gone running around campus at night and there are cops and security guards everywhere. the extended campus and the downtown areas next to campus are great, and then beyond that it can start to get a little iffy, but it’s not like you’d ever have to go to those areas anyways. overall it’s as safe as any urban school can be
