Yale v. USC

So i got into Yale economics, and if i go to Yale i will be about 40k in debt coming out
i also got into USC Marshall with a trustee scholarship, so I will have no debt coming out.
i really don't know wat to do... does anyone have advice?

Where are you from?

southern california, and i do intend to live here after college, so I no that the USC alumni network would b really helpful. But i am also wondering whether a degree from yale would be more helpful or the same here in southern california, and whether it would be worth it to be in debt that much.

oh, usc for sure IMO

usc absolutely!

remember though this is a very bias area to post this ;]
same with the yale forum
make your decision after you've visited Yale to be sure :]
see you when you get back lol

I would say USC for a few reasons...

-first of all, I know Yale would be extremely rigorous and you might be able to get better grades at USC which would look better to grad schools

-its like somebody paying you 200,000 dollars to go to USC

-the weather...

-USC would be way more fun!

-plus graduating with debt would suck, and from what I hear student loans are a ***** to pay off

If you are thinking about an MBA, then USC. If not, then Yale. Yale without a doubt if you are considering medical schools or law schools.

you're an ECON major!! this should be easy.
no debt> yale.

USC!

I think the people here are going to be biased towards USC. Personally, I'd pick Yale (I mean seriously, it's Yale), but if $$$ is a problem, and if you're really after that MBA and plan on working/living in SoCal after graduation, then probably USC.

Interesting. I would say Yale if you are interested in an MBA because if you go to Marshall, then you already have a business degree (I realize an undergrad business degree and MBA are not the same, but then you'd have two business degrees).

That being said, 40k is a lot of loans. Definitely decide after you've visited both (have you done so?).

OK there is no absolutely right decision. Obviously Yale is an Ivy League and very prestigious school, I think that if you can go there you will be very set for life, and I think paying back loans won't be that much of a problem unless you are extremely broke. Also note that the starting salaries at Yale are typically much higher than USC, so the thing is, you will probably be able to earn the money back and plus more.

The reasons you might want to consider USC are that its a much easier curriculum, if you are going to college for the "fun factor" as well as the "future career" factor, then you can't go wrong with USC. You also won't have to pay back your debts.

Thinking ahead, maybe 5-8 years later, I think Yale would be the better choice if you can handle it. Seeing as you got accepted there, it probably means you can handle it. Looking at it short-term, USC is probably gonna be more fun, easier, less stressful.

Hope I helped you a bit.

I'd go to Yale in a heartbeat.

You have to ask yourself this:

Will going to Yale (and keep in mind this is undergraduate, not graduate) help you make $40,000 (plus interest and any other cost difference) more than if you went to USC?

how is the econ program at Yale?
I know Penn has a really strong business/business related program there, but just because it's Ivy does not necessarily mean Yale is stronger in that specific major. I know I gave up Cornell because its communication major is not as strong as USC's and Northwestern because apparently they treat you like a number at both of those.
Also, do you like the environment of Yale? I was absolutely disgusted with New Haven when I visited so that was out of the question for me.
