Hi everyone, I was admitted to these three schools for computer science: Yale, Northeastern, and NYU. With financial aid, they are all in a similar range with Yale and Northeastern being slightly cheaper than NYU. I know that Yale is an IVY but I’ve heard bipolar opinions about the CS program and that it is not up there, while I’ve heard about Northeastern’s curriculum being undergrad focused, and they have Co-ops as well. However, being that Yale is an Ivy, I would have a lot more opportunities to participate in different areas.
My research and understanding of these schools may be wrong, so I would like to ask for your help.
Between these three colleges, which would the best in terms of CS curriculum, rigor, extracurricular opportunities, recruiting, and career prospects?
Thank you for any advice!
An “Ivy” degree is certainly always great in terms of everything. However, Yale is not known for its CS program as you mentioned. The other CS programs are likely even better than Yale’s, but in terms of career opportunities – the Yale name may help a bit. Go with your gut. Go with whichever school is the best “fit” for you. The fact that you are asking this question makes me feel you’re more inclined towards Northeastern or NYU.
Considered by program strength in CS, Northeastern could be a good choice. Nonetheless, your decision could reasonably be based on your subjective understanding of your choices’ broader attributes.
You’ll do fine with a CS degree from any of them. If it was me, I’d pick Yale. That mostly has to do with me loving the campus. but us old-time programmers might remember that Yale was one of the pioneers in AI.
Yep, if costs are the same, I would pick Yale. More flexibility of options if you decide on another path. And yes, Yale was one of the early leaders in AI. Northwestern then took pretty much their entire CS faculty.
Second would be NYU.
Already posted my opinion on your other thread here, I think it really comes down to fit preference here / certainty in major which you haven’t provided any comments on.

Yale. As a parent, I’ve seen my kids change majors. It’s best to consider the whole school and what else they offer in the event that you do decide to change majors. BTW DD attended Yale and did grow to love the school dearly. In terms of lifestyle, Northeastern has a campus, but you also have fun Boston and lots of students from other schools. NYU has no campus, so it’s like walking thru the streets of Manhattan is like your campus. Yale has a beautiful campus, though surrounding New Haven is slightly scary, so you mainly stay contained on campus.
Just chiming in here - my two cents is if you’re SURE you’re a CS major Northeastern, if not, Yale.
My own background is I had the Ivy ~bug~ and am glad I did. No idea what I wanted and fell into CS my sophomore year. BUT, since doing that, I’ve fallen in love Northeastern’s PL lab and Matthias Fellisen/Racket.
People have made good points, I just felt that was a niche one that had been missing. All’s to say congrats!
