Yale vs. Princeton

posterX has a huge bias towards Yale. princeton is much better for science and the best for getting into med school

^ I disagree. And in terms of getting into med school, a study of the incoming classes at the top medical schools, adjusted for the number of applicants by school, showed that Yale was the #1 pre-med school in the country in terms of getting its graduates into the very best medical schools, followed closely by Caltech and MIT. Amherst, Harvard and Johns Hopkins were the runner-ups. Of course, some of that has to do with the quality of incoming students in the first place -- and in that regard, Yale is second to none.

for once, posterX's statistics are absolutely correct. Yale is the #1 pre-med school in the country in terms of getting its graduates into medical school, though I don't know about "the very best."

Crime rate is much higher in New Haven. My cousin and my friend, both Yale students, were mugged. It's a real problem, especially if you are a female. Just be careful--ALWAYS walk in groups after dark.

Of course, those stats from post #20 are for grad school. There would obviously be adjustments for undergrad. At Princeton, being undergrad only, you will get lots of attention and opportunity to work directly with professors.

Princeton isn't undergrad only - in fact it has one of the best overall grad programs in the country. And I've never seen any evidence to lead me to believe that Princeton provides more support or resources to undergrads than does Yale, they both provide an amazing education to their students.

I'm making the same decision. It's tough, but I'm definately leaning toward Yale right now. I'm going to Princeton Preview and then Bulldog Days before I make my final decision.

Sorry to hijack this thread, but for those who are going to both Princeton/Yale's admit days, what is the best method to get from Pton to Yale on Sunday? I'm flying from California, so I'm a little lost as to how the train/bus systems work up along the East Coast! Thanks.

You could take the dinky to Princeton Junction and from there take a train to Trenton. From Trenton, take the Amtrak Accela Express to New Haven, its the fourth or fifth stop the train makes on its way to Boston. Feel free to PM me if you have any questions about this.

Doesn't Amtrak stop at Princeton Junction. I know when I was a pre-frosh making this decision I took Amtrak from New Haven to Princeton Junction and then the dinky into campus.

Go to Princeton. It was my #1 choice, but I was rejected. I was waitlisted at Yale... make room for me! Go to Princeton! heh. In all honesty though, you can't go wrong.

Unfortunately, Amtrak doesn't stop at Princeton Junction. You have to go to Trenton first.

Go to Yale if you want to hang out with people like PosterX for 4 years. Just kidding - there are douchebags at every school. Anyway, be sure to learn all you can about both school, so that you can make the decision best for you. I know I did.

Hmm. I swear it stopped at Princeton Junction 2 years ago. Anyhow, the other alternative is to take NJ transit between Princeton Junction and Penn Station, and then Amtrak from Penn Station to Yale.

As for the posterX thing, he isn't actually a Yale student or alum.

no, everyone knows posterX gets paid by Yale admissions to promote the college and say with certainty that Yale leads at #1 for EVERY program. Better engineering than MIT, better math than Princeton, better economics than chicago, better arts than Juliard, bettercomputer science than Stanford.

Are you guys sure Amtrak doesn't stop at Princeton Junction? I went to visit UPenn about three weeks ago and it definitely stopped at Princeton Junction (or passed by it...) Maybe I'm lying.

In all honesty, I don't think you will be lacking in challenge or program strength at either school. I am making the same choice, and right now I am definitely leaning towards Yale. Yale is so incredible- wait until you visit. You will fall in love.

Yes, you will fall in love with Yale.

Old Campus, welcome back to the Yale board.

Well, while visiting Yale two weeks ago, I did NOT fall in love with the school. That's not my style. But hopefully I will at bulldog days.

9505: Some Amtrak trains do still stop at Princeton Junction; it's just a limited schedule. Son has found it easier to just take the dinky to PJ, NJ Transit to Trenton, and hop on a much bigger selection of trains at Trenton. Seems to work pretty well. even in the early / late hours.
