Yale with a 2.4 GPA?

<p>I'm guessing most of you are scoffing at me after reading the title. Yes, I'm applying to Yale with a 2.4 UW GPA. I don't think it's indicative of my capabilities compared to other applicants, though. </p>

<p>I don't want to list off E.Cs, awards, essays, etc, but I will say that the subjective parts of my application make me a competative applicant. My GPA, however, is so low, because my school introduced some rediculus grade-deflating policies last year which make it impossible to get an A, or even a B, in most classes. Thus, although I have a 2.4, I'm ranked second in my class of about 200 - #1 has a 2.48. My SAT is 2360, and my SAT IIs are 780+. </p>

<p>So, I do think that I'm a competative applicant for Yale, but I'm afraid that they will discard my file without reading my essays and looking at the rest of my app because of my GPA.
I don't want to be dismissed because my school chose to adopt measures that I feel are totally ridiculous. </p>

<p>What can I do to avoid an almost certain rejection due to my GPA?</p>

<p>I would seriously recommend you to mention this in the additional section. I wouldn’t worry about them “discarding your file”, since they would probably take into account your rank as well. Plus your SATs are stellar, so I wouldn’t worry.</p>

<p>^Agreed. Definitely have your counselor mention that the valedictorian has a 2.48. Your class rank is what will save you, as it puts your GPA into perspective. I think you have a decent shot at possibly being the lowest GPA ever accepted into Yale lol.</p>

<p>I thought for the AI, the actual numerical GPA didn’t play a role unless the school doesn’t rank, at least according to Hernandez’s book. So they would input rank 2 and class size instead of GPA. This truly is an odd circumstance. </p>

<p>LOL, hold on a sec. Dosen’t yale reveal the average g.p.a of incoming freshman or something? This would bring it down quite a bit. So lets say someone has the same stats as you, but their school does not practice grade deflation, would they pick him? ;D</p>

<p>This is some serious stupidity on the school’s part. However like above post have pointed out, in your guidance counselor’s recommendation or somewhere on your app have him or her write about the practice. The fact that you are #2 and your SAT scores are like that will give Yale some perspective on how the school is run. I wouldn’t try to focus all of your application about the GPA, focus on your good points and Good Luck :)</p>

<p>Your counselor report includes your school profile - which will put your GPA into perspective. Admission Committees are experts at evaluating you in the context of your school / location. That’s what they say - and what they do for a living. So your application won’t be discarded but evaluated carefully / wholistically, I believe.</p>
