Yale Young Global Scholars 2017

Hey ! I’ll be applying for Yygs 2017 . (Frontier of Maths and Science. )
is anyone else applying ?
It will be really very helpful if any Yygs alumni can provide some tips and helps !
Thanks (:
Feel free to discuss about yygs here !

attended this past summer. not really helpful, IMO. spend the summer doing research or other things like that

@tomatox1 thanks for your suggestions. But, would you mind telling what exactly did you do over there and why it isn’t of much help ?

@Thatnerdgirl373 ,

DS attended as a student, and then taught for a summer (the summer BEFORE tomatox1 attended). I don’t want to overstate what I know, but DS mentioned that they were growing the program significantly, and might have marched beyond their supply lines.

ETA: Kids sometimes overestimate how much it might affect admission to UG. There is a tiny, tiny, evaluative component. Did I mention tiny?

All in all, it was a positive experience for DS.

@IxnayBob ,
Thanks a lot for clearifying my doubts. I’m surely looking for a wonderful and extraordinary experience and not something which can help me get into a good college. I want to spend my summers in some comstructive and knowledgeable summer program. I guess yygs will be perfect for me.

Thanks again.
Do share some more tips and suggestions on it. (:

I was accepted last year, and I disagree. Not 100% sure how I got in, because at the time my SAT was a 1970, (but to be fair I took it as a sophomore so I could take some dual enrollment courses, and when I took it this yea, my senior year, it rose dramatically). I attended the first and only TIE Session, and I have to say, it was very useful. I got help with college essays, learned a lot, met people who I still talk to and am currently working on projects with, and it was a great program overall.

@sweatearl thankyou so much ! Just a question I want to ask- Is the program ‘All work and no play’? I mean, do we get some free time or ‘enjoy’ time over there?

Not all work no play. A pretty healthy balance, work and play were infused, and honestly it was the most fun I had all summer. There was designated freetime, and to be honest it was the most fun I had all summer (and I spent my summer doing things like YYGS and hanging around friends, so that’s saying something). it’s very balanced between work and play.

@sweatearl thankyou so much ! I hope I get accepted in yygs 2017

It’s not that helpful for college apps, if that’s what you’re asking about. It’s definitely fun and you’ll meet a ton of super cool people though, so that’s good!

@tomatox1 thanks for your suggestions. And I’ll be applying just to have a good time and learn new things (:

It’s fun after you meet the people there, but the capstone was so pointless, honestly.

I attended the 2016 PLE session, and the experience was definitely incredible! The two weeks were packed and literally flew by, and by far, the people I met there were the best part (Insomnia cookies was also heavenly :P)
In terms of applying, think of it as a practice college application. My qualifications, for the most part, were far behind basically everyone there (tbh I have no clue how I even got in), but I was true to myself, and I guess they liked that. I know this sounds cliché, but you just do you:)
Good luck! :x

Hi! (If anyone is still on this thread lol). Can anyone give me advice on how to approach the essays?

^^^ @siroscarwilde: Happy New Year! I’m going to take a wild guess here – and other posters, especially those that have been admitted to Yale in the last 100 years, please correct me if I’m wrong. My guess is that very few students (probably none) have been admitted to Yale who wrote an essay from scratch 48-hours before the deadline. That’s because college essays take time, you need to think about a topic, possibly write 5 or 6 essays on different topics before deciding which one is the most appropriate to send to Yale (or another college), and then you need to edit, refine, and polish your essay. None of that can be easily accomplished within a 48-hour time frame. As such, IMHO, you are wasting your parents good money applying to Yale (or any other college) without having spent at least a couple of weeks, or a couple of months on your essays. At this late juncture, it would be better to repurpose an essay that you sent to another college for Yale rather start from scratch. Best of luck to you in the next 3060 minutes whatever you decide to do!

@gibby Happy new year to you too! That’s true, I agree you shouldn’t wait till last minute for any good essay, but confused. I’m not doing it 48 hours before the deadline??? This thread is for applying to YYGS, right? Which has a deadline of January 31st, 2017.

^^ Sorry, my mistake.

I was thinking of applying too, but the tuition cost of over $5000 seems a little too high, so that’s been a major turn off. How much financial aid is it possible of getting of you get accepted?

As I understand it, many get financial aid but the packages aren’t great.

Hi guys, I just submitted my application for the YYGS (BBS is my first choice). I’m super scared. I’m a little bit worried about my essays. What did you write about?
