BOSTON -- Craig Breslow arrived at the Triple-A All-Star Game Wednesday night, took a look at the list on the home clubhouse wall detailing how the International League’s pitchers would be used and saw he wouldn’t be pitching in the game, instead throwing a side session.

He knew something was up.

"Not too many guys go to the All-Star Game to throw a side session," he reasoned.

But what exactly was going on? Was he about to be traded, or called up to the big leagues? Turns out, it was the latter.

Breslow, a New Haven native and graduate of both Trumbull High and Yale University, was called up to Boston on Thursday, taking the roster spot occupied by struggling starter Jason Johnson, who’s now in Single-A Wilmington. Breslow got the news Thursday morning from Ron Johnson, his manager at Triple-A Pawtucket who had been a coach at the All-Star Game in Toledo and had to keep the secret until their plane landed at T.F. Green Airport.

"Surprised, excited, anxious, all at the same time," Breslow said of his reaction. "Obviously, things have been going very well up here and you don’t want to tinker with things too much. Hopefully, I’ll be able to fit in."

Exactly where (or how long) he’ll fit in isn’t abundantly obvious. A lefty specialist last season in San Diego, where he posted a 2.20 ERA and limited lefties to an .063 average, Breslow has been used far more liberally with Pawtucket. He’s gone 5-1 with a 3.40 ERA in 26 outings, struck out 50 batters in 46 innings and was the PawSox’ lone All-Star...

Alas, he was sent back to the minors after one appearance. It's a tough business.

Looks like he's been called back up. I'm hoping he lasts a little longer this time.

Well, Theo Epstein is a Yalie. There ya go.

Alas, back to the minors again. But he lasted longer than last time. And he pitched decently enough - certainly quite a bit better than the Sox bullpen did tonight. My guess is he'll be back in September, if not before.

sox fan cosar? yesteday must have hurt a little

Today must have hurt a little.

The past two overall managers of the Red Sox were Yalies.
