Yale's Philosophy Department

Hello everyone. I just thought I'd chime in and let you know what's going on with Yale's philosophy department. There are concerns that it is very weak. The reason it is currently ranked low is because a while back there was a big upheaval in the department--lots of fighting, leaving, etc. Only one professor remains from before the big changes.

I can reassure you that the department is much much stronger than it was even 4 years ago. We have some wonderful young professors, and I think the department just hired about 5 new professors who will begin next year. It's a good time to be a philosophy major! I know many absolutely brilliant people who are majoring in the department now and have no complains. So I wouldn't worry about philosophy it Yale. It will simply to take time to rebuild its damaged reputation. True, we don't have Parfit (Harvard) or Nehemas or Cooper (Princeton)...but the undergraduate level education is superb.

just a general question about Yale's philosophy dept:

what are some of the things that students do after they get a philosophy degree there? i'm sure this varies widely, but specifics would be great

thanks!

I also posted this in another thread:

Is there any trace of Derrida and the Yale School of Deconstruction left in Yale's curricula? I realize it might not be considered under a "philosophy" major, I was wondering if anyone knows whetehr or not Yale offers courses in the general area.

Deconstructionism, poststructuralism and the like are the flavor of the week in most philosophy departments. You won't have a problem finding courses that deal with that (although many may be in English, CompLit or Art History).

Hey, grad ain't half bad either. My roommate's applying there for his doctorate.

Yes, but given the presence of Shelly Kagan,Keith DeRose, and Jules Coleman you will not find much respect for him in the philosophy department.

The philosophy program is not bad, though there are definitely better departments; however, undergraduates will probably not notice the difference. Rankings are really only pertinent for prospective graduate students.

Yeah I don't think Derrida/Deconstructionism are v. strong presences. The department is excellent in the history of philosophy and pretty good in metaphysics.
