Yale's Residential Colleges: Style, Personality, Character!

I thought it'd be fun to start a thread about each of Yale's residential colleges since I know that I, for one, am pretty curious as to the environment, style, etc. of each college! Are there a lot of parties? Do people stay in their rooms and study all the time? Are intramurals big? And so on and so forth. Please add/edit the list if you have any contributing info: :)

Berkeley:

Branford:

Calhoun:

Davenport:

Ezra Stiles:

Jonathan Edwards:

Morse:

Pierson:

Saybrook:

Silliman:

Timothy Dwight:

Trumbull:

I’ve heard that any “personalities” the colleges might have change relatively often… As you know, students are assigned to colleges randomly, so it’s pretty unlikely that any college have the same type of students every year and, as a result, build up a lasting reputation.

The colleges’ character changes w/each infusion of freshmen. My college, JE, was known for its “artsy-fartsy” rep before my entering class. For some reason there seemed to be fewer super artsy folks and plenty of athletes in my class. As we went through, our presence changed the feel of JE our four years. We became actually very competitive in intramurals. Basically the characters are constantly in flux and it’d be silly to characterize one type or another. It’s what you make of it.

BTW: intramurals are very popular with about 75% of undergrads participating in something – all to shed sweat and blood for their own colleges.

^ Out of curiosity, Crew isn’t an intramural sport at Yale by chance, is it? :(

fire bunny

i was just wondering why u put “SLC, UT => Yale 2014!! (most likely)” as ur location?

y most likely?,

Agreed with above… any reputation a college might have is as transient as its randomly assigned students. Sometimes when a college is high in the intramural standings, a group of its students will become very eager about IM sports.

Probably a more useful way to think about it is that your college will have the character that you give to it. Which makes it more or less impossible to predict what your college will be like without knowing the people in your college year.

I was accepted to Yale SCEA, and I’m 99% sure I’m going to go there. However, on the off chance that I get accepted to and receive a looooooot better financial aid package from Harvard, I’ll reconsider. But ya… the more I do my research, the more I love Yale and hate Harvard :stuck_out_tongue: Haha

And thanks for all the input guys :)

Yale is the better choice.
: )

kwijiborit, that is a great explanation of how the residential college character comes from the students…you have nailed it… I predict you will be successful in life… cause you definitely have emotional intelligence… well done…

firebunny,

if u get accepted to yale SCEA, dont u HAVE to attend yale? like its binding…

u should really call harvard and withdraw ur application so that someone who actually wants to go gets to go…

No, it’s not binding.
EA = Non-binding.
ED = Binding.

Um, yeah. Not binding. If it were, do you really think I’d be that mean?! ^^ I mean, sheesh…

oo srry.

congrats on yale btw! yale’s always been my dream school.

can u put up some of ur stats so i can get an idea of where i’m standing in the applicant pool? that would be awesome!

Thanks :slight_smile: I was ecstatic to get in! And very, very, very lucky…

Um, stats. Sure:

SAT I: 2390, 790 M
SAT II: 790, 790, 770, 740
GPA: 3.97 UW
APs taken: 6 soph year, 5 junior year, 2 IBs junior year and 4 IBs senior year (:S)
ECs: National debate awards, state debate champion, DECA, Science Olympiad, Crew, Cross Country, Track…

You should know though, that I don’t think it’s my ECs or GPA or scores that got me in (there were two other girls who applied and we were all equally strong in those areas). I think it’s probably my essays, recs, and a LOOOOT of luck.
Good luck to you Kelloggss :slight_smile: Did you apply this year RD?

yeah, i applied RD.

i agree with ur point about essays, recs and luck. but ur stats definitely put u in a position where luck and such played a part!

i’m from canada and i heard that yale accepts around 20 canadians a year. i’m not sure if its harder or easier to apply as a canadian since there are obviously fewer spots, but canadians generally have lower sats and less major major awards…

Well, according to the Yale admitted students site, they’ve only admitted 10 students from Canada Early Action so far, so there’s still half the spots left, at least! I wish you the best of luck :)

holy smokes…half already?

there goes my chances at yale…

thanks for the luck though :D

Well, I’m sure not that many Canadians applied in comparison to everywhere else (the US! being an example…) So yeah :slight_smile: I’ll cross my fingers for you!

I searched “Canadian” in the YDN and came across this old article: [Yale Daily News - Yale admits 1,458 regular decision applicants](http://www.yaledailynews.com/news/university-news/2003/04/03/yale-admits-1458-regular-decision-applicants/) Apparently, 32 Canadian students were admitted in 2003, and if this is generally how many are admitted per year, there are quite a few spots remaining. As well, as a fellow Canadian, I can tell you that I know of many great applicants who were already snagged by ED programs at other colleges. Also, for some reason, Yale just isn’t popular among Canadians… For some reason, New Haven’s bad rap has seeped into the minds of Canadians applying to US colleges, and many of my friends are steering clear of Yale as a result. Can’t complain. :)

thanks for everyone supporting me for yale :D

i’m gonna say it again, i would absolutely die to get into yale…

@rocker
ur right, alot of great canadians are indeed taken by ea programs. that makes me feel very very happy…lol
