Yale's Theatre Program?

I am very interested in going to Yale. I have heard they have an excellent theatre program and the best drama department of the Ivies. But how does it compare to other theatre programs? Would you rank it as one of the top programs? Thanks.

"Would you rank it as one of the top programs? " Yes.

And I can’t imagine another campus where theater life is so ingrained into the mainstream of campus culture. There are probably 20 different productions each semster – from one person plays to full ensembles to offerings by the Yale Dramat and the Yale Repertory Theater to the Shubert and Long Wharf theaters. Many productions bound for Broadway work out their kinks in New Haven.

For the student plays, plenty of auditions and lots of funding for practically anyone’s ideas.

The four richest years of my life, in terms of enjoying theater.

Thank you. Do you or any of your classmates have successful careers in theatre?

Are non-theatre majors allowed to participate in student productions as backstage crew and/or stage managers? DS has volunteered as a stage manager (through an apprenticeship program) and would like to continue in college Is that is possible at Yale?

livyleague: My roommate is a professional actor in CA. Has some side TV work but mostly theater. In my year are two names you may have heard of: Ron Livingston and Paul Giamatti. I had Economics and French (I think) with Ron. Never had any classes w/Paul.

Mominsc: since there are so many productions going on, the atmosphere is very vibrant – with producers/directors/writers trying to snag up good actors and crew. Your DS, with her experience, would be highly valued. The vast majority of people involved are not theatre majors. Later she might be one of those casting and auditioning others… It’s not hard to find stage space and money to back up practically any project. Not kidding.

T2 - That is good to hear! Stage management is his major EC - almost a full-time job when he is the stage manager with 6 solid weeks of rehearsals, 6 days a week. He really enjoys the work and the theatre camaraderie.
