For those people who don't say y'all when referring to a certain group of people what do you say instead? I have been wondering this forever!! Please response with no region-bashing or any other kind of hate :) Thanks

“You all”
“You guys”
“All of you”

Yeah, “you guys”.
Or just you with a sweep of the hands. Or pointing, or something.

I do really wish English had a distinct second person plural, though. One that a) I could say without people thinking I’m a redneck idiot (no offense, it’s just the stereotype and b) I could pull off. Being, you know, a decidedly west coast girl…

“you guys” sounds good and i’m close to philly where alot of people say “allz yuz” and some other silly stuff. but in england and australia they say things like mates and bloody. And they use diferent words.

Here we say “ni men”, “da jia”, or (in more formal cases) “tong xue men”.

I usually say “you guys”

I can’t stand “y’all”

^What’s wrong with y’all?

I personally use y’all and ‘you guys’

I just say “guys” when addressing a group of people. Or sometimes “people” as in “what’s up, people?”

“You guys”.

And yet I WAS BORN AND RAISED IN GEORGEUH

I agree. Both “you all” and “y’all” are awkward to say, at least in my case. I’m from up north but I live in FL so I feel guilty for saying “y’all” when I’m not a true southerner, but saying “you all” is just so… bleh.

“YO!”

That’s how we do it in the 202. Word.

I am from Illinois but I use “y’all” sometimes, otherwise il just say hey guys or something lol

Born and raised in New England and I use y’all sometimes, haha. But most people around here just say “you guys”.

If you said y’all in Minnesota or pretty much anywhere in the upper midwest you would get laughed at. Normal people say you guys. Y’all actually sounds terrible.

In Minnesota, isn’t it “yeh-gais” where “gais” = “pies” with a g sound at the beginning instead of p?

When people say it, and it’s natural to their diction, I loooove it.
I just can’t stand when people write out “y’all.” Even in most novels.

Keep saying “y’all”! It’s adorable/sweet/comforting.

^Yeah I use to feel the same way but now that I use the word in my latin class to help translate things I got use to it lol

I feel like the MN accent is over exaggerated a lot due to Fargo (it’s not nearly as bad as that). Sometimes our O’s and A’s are longer (which ironically makes Minnesooota and Haaakey some of our worst words), but other than that I don’t think it’s any different than standard American (That is, until you start getting into the iron range north of Duluth, there it gets a little dicey).

^ I thought everyone pronounced “guys” like “pies.”

I also say “you guys.” I have a friend from Texas who says “y’all” but she doesn’t have a southern accent, and I have another friend who sometimes says “youse guys,” which i think is hilarious.

^ Nah, the two different pronunciations even have different jaw movements.
For “pies” the jaw sharply goes down a small amount. For the New England one, the jaw goes down slowly and sort of curves as it does so.

One sounds nasally, the other deep.
