YAY!!! International Post 4? :)

Three quarters of the schools I appplied to were LACs, I applied to Williams, Middlebury, MHC and lotsa others...

You don't need to take the APs if you are taking the A Levels.

Nopes.. you are not URM, URM category is only for Americans .

Your ECs are all there... really cool ones you have! but your scores... are sadly not.. You DO have a chance... but if your scores are higher (750 over), you'll probably have a significant chance of getting in.

upandover - post yor stats.
Thanx

Wow! Your EC stats read almost exactly like mine, oh laila (interesting nick by the way. Brings back memories of all those ancient Hindi movies they had here). Except for the henna designing thing... that's a bit out there, so maybe they'll get really impressed by that (don't they all want diversity?). I'm really into theatre, debate, extempore and writing too. Also, Badminton state championship. But really, I don't know if that'll count for much cuz' almost none of the colleges offer badminton as intramural sports (forget varsity). You're a published writer? Oh, do you mean journals or something?

I was thinking about Middlebury, but then, I wanted to apply some place where I could be dead sure I'd get in. Cuz' I'm already applying to places like Northwestern, UPenn, UChicago, Swarthmore and Duke. Needed some safety schools as well. Astrix - great to know you're thinking about Swarthmore too. I'd give up an Ivy acceptance (right... like I'll get in) for it.

How significant is the SAT 2 writing score for the internationals.
I got an A in Olevel english and my expected grade in General Paper (AS level) is A.
So should i be worried abut it....?

Did well on Math 2C and quite OK on Pysics, but doesnt seem i will get a good score on writing, will be really very lucky to get even a 700...

My name is Alexandre. I grew up in Abu Dhabi and now work in Dubai. Feel free to email me or call me if you would like some advice/information. There is quite a bit you can do in terms of aid, but you have to do a lot of research and pursue it aggressively.

Hmm... both Northwestern and UoC is a bit of a paradox :)

I dunno, Northwestern is just a very different school. Much more 'pre-professional'

Cres, the writing score definitely counts. If you make the 700+, it should be okay.

Or you can just blow them over with your essay

I dunno why I'm so fascinated with Northwestern. Seems like one of those old England schools to me. I know... sounds stupid, but I get these totally whacky impressions of each college that's really hard to shake. Like I was fascinated with all the gargoyles on the UChicago campus. :p But, I just love their essay topics (especially Chicago's), and I'm applying primarily cuz' of them.

hey upandover i'm cooldude from the old international posts,

class of 09 going for Stanford EA. Hows Yale?? whats ur major?? how are the Science and Engg facilities?

btw what were ur scores??
i think my Verbal and writing scores are way toooo low. (600V and Writing 600-700)

I loved the garogyles too!! Yes, their essay topics are crazy. Crazy nice. So, we like share Swarthmore and UoC so far.

Cooldude, hello will take getting used to

Ooh... let's match up others. I'm also definitely applying to Bowdoin and Trinity College (this is my safety school). And as for the last, I'm juggling between Hamilton or Grinnell or Middleton (really want to apply to this one, but not sure I'll get in :().

BTW, which essay topic are you opting for? I'm doing the mustard thing. Really wanted to do the teleclone operator thing, but really didn't know what to write in that beyond - I'm the one on Mars or I'm the one on Earth.

Na, I'm not applying to those LACs. I'm only sure about applying to Princeton, UoC, Swarthmore which are all super-reaches. I'll also be applying to Lehigh which is still reasonable at least...

The essay, I haven't decided types. Will do it in december :p

Edit: I am thinking of Bowdoin though

heyhey I'm from Malaysia as well. Gonna apply for the class of 2009. Yay, mostly leaning towards the LAC's. Gonna apply to Stanford, Dartmouth, Middlebury, Davidson, Colgate, Washington and Lee University, and probably BAtes/ Carleton..Still unsure though....Just did the sAT2 on Oct 9. I think i tottaly flipped the US history paper. Self studied for it...but i know i'm dead..ahahah

I can read, write n speak arabic, so i spose dat shud also get their attention a BIT..lol.. all in all, im sure i wudnt be a very stereotyped candidate..

its really sad abt badminton, man, i love dat game n im quite good at it.. i mean if its there in olympics why not som US unis..??? blv me, i cant play anythin else lol..i can ice skate..but cant play ice hockey though! hehehe..!

ok abt the safety skools, i do hav a list, but im not really thinkin a lot abt it rite now(ramadan just started!) perhaps after eid or somthin..dats when times really gonna get tight..ive already applied HArvard EA..shesh, so im in DIRE need of prayers rite now heheh :)
hey cres, i got an A* in my eng O level too.. u're takin GP in AS..why not eng lang?? i wudve rather prefered Lang n lit but they dun hav any teachers around here for dat..shucks!

cres, i screwed up my writin test too.. the collgboard guys told me i skipped 10 MCs!!! i never leave a question, n besides, it was an easy paper!! just imagine where my score wudve been if not for dat glitch!!! (its 710 now!)

guys, could u help me out wid som safety/match unis dat DO offer finaid for foreign students.. my annual household income is even below $10,000.. i really cannot expect my father to support me in college, not a bit.

P.S. im applyin to UoC too..any idea if UPenn n Stanford offer finaid for foreign students???? (i guess i read a big NO somwhere on their websites..)

There is a post on the old board written by Carolyn with a lot of schools that offer aid to internationals : http://www.collegeconfidential.com/discus/messages/4/40737.html

I'm probably going to apply to:

Yale
Amherst
Swarthmore
Middlebury
Grinnell
Kenyon
Bowdoin
Carleton
Macalester
Beloit
Lawrence

hello,
Science and Engineering... well... if you are really into it.. like really REALLY... you'll be better off going to MIT or Caltech... but for most people, some semblance of balance is good. There are support groups for science, but again, frankly, not much emphasis is placed on science here.... my friend in mit told me he had yet to meet ANYONE doing art-y stuff eg. English, Theater, Film, whatever... the atmosphere there must be crazily intense. I'm doing Geology, which has a small department, really cool... only like two students major in it each year, so we get lotsa attention. :D

spkelly,
yeah, i remember you from one of your old posts..... you didn't reply me at the end i think. :)

ria,
good list. not sure about lawrence and beloit though.

Oh! laila, (heh :p) upenn and stanford do offer aid but it's pretty damn competitive. They aren't need-blind so if you can't pay and aren't that great for them to offer aid, they reject

ria, thanks for the link. helped loads.

upandover - I'm applying to Macalester, Beloit and Lawrence throught a special application. I'm going as much work (and paying) as much as I would have if I only applied Mac.

astrix - you're welcome!

Hey spkelly! I'm from Malaysia too (now studying in Singapore under the ASEAN pre-U scholarship). Applying to Yale EA, and a few more schools that I haven't quite decided for sure. Are you applying for the Wesleyan scholarship too?
