Yeah, it's another junior

How does it look for the following schools? Advice/other suggestions are welcome. I’m hoping to major in English and possibly earn teaching certification.

Brown, Carleton, Kenyon, Oberlin, Amherst, Pomona, Connecticut College, WashU, Middlebury, Occidental, Beloit, Knox.

** School: ** Public school in suburban Missouri

-National History Day regional finalist (top 10 in Greater St. Louis area)
-Citywide science fair top female division winner (scholarship)
-Citywide science fair division winner (top 10 in grade level)
-High Honor Roll all four years (woot)

I’ve entered several writing competitions (Scholastic, etc.) this year, so hopefully a few of those will work out.

** Extracurricular Activities: **

-Literary Magazine (Staffer – 10, Junior Editor – 11, Senior Editor – 12)

-Music
Women’s Select choir (9-10)
Varsity choir (10-12)
Handbell choir (7-12) (Guest director – 11)

-Youth Elder at my church (elected by church; significant time commitment)
Education Commission (11-12)

-Youth group (9-12)

-Softball – JV-A (9-10) - Not sure if I should put this (?)

** Volunteer Experience: **

-Tutor a third grader for two hours/week (100 hrs by graduation)
-Play the music for children’s worship services (7-12)

-10-day mission trips every summer with my youth group. So far, we’ve gone to West Virginia, Washington DC, and South Dakota, and mostly focus on building/renovating projects. We pay a significant portion of the costs for these trips through several fundraisers throughout the year.

** Summer: **
-Interlochen Arts Camp – Creative Writing major (summers 2007 and 2008)
-Mission Trips (see above)

As you might be able to tell, I’m most serious about writing. I know that my recommendations will be good (probably one great, one decent but generic) and hopefully my writing ability will come through for me in my essays. I am submitting a portfolio supplement, but only at schools that allow them.

I’m mostly concerned with my extracurriculars/volunteer experience/awards. It seems like so much (I feel like I’m busy all the time!) but when I type it all out like this, it doesn’t look like much at all.

If you have anything else that I could be feasibly doing (something other than “add more ECs” please), please let me know. Thank you!

Bump…any help would be appreciated!

You look like a very strong applicant and I I think many schools will be happy to have you. You mission work and being from Missouri will also help. I would also put down the softball experience on your application. The only three I know something about are Knox, Beloit and Ct. College and you look very good for all three.

Thank you! Bump…probably shouldn’t have been so offhand with my title…

Sorry to be annoying, but I’d love some opinions/advice.

190 views and only one response?

One last bump. If you don’t want to advise/chance, maybe you could give me suggestions on improving the thread so more people will? :)

Brown is a maybe, the others are very likely!

btw. SAME PSAT SCORE!!!

it really all depends on this sat’s SAT scores, but with your 222 psat you’ll probably be fine. You’re a strong applicant for most of the LAC’s on your list. Your EC’s are fine, grades fine…and your substantial involvement in music will be looked upon highly.
