Hey, I was just wondering if being ~a year younger for my grade will have any impact whatsoever on my MIT admission. I'm a junior, my birthday was Dec 14, 1993. I'm just curious b/c I could be a sophomore right now, and currently there are people in my grade over a year older then me - an advantage? I didn't skip a grade or anything, I just got in early. Thanks.

This post is mostly about home school students, but it also applies to younger students.

To answer your question, not really.

No, you’re not all that much younger anyway. I have senior friends who were born in October/November/December 1992.

Yah, I know, I was just curious. But my parents had to lie that my birthday was Dec 1 to get me into Kindergarden lol. And I’m the youngest in my grade so… And @cgarcia I’m not really a child genius :P.

Oh.

I was hoping there was another one…

same grade. 12/18/93. 4 days lol…

It’s actually fairly common among MIT students to be in that situation (although many people did get there by skipping a grade or two). My birthday is in February, and I went from being about the middle of my year in high school to being one of the older students in my MIT class.

I don’t have any information on whether it’s actually considered by admissions (I doubt it is), but it is certainly a common thing at MIT.

No it isn’t considered. Instead you can use this experience (that’s what I did) in your essays. A good introduction would definitely attract MIT and have an interest on you.

Ditto Mollie - my birthday is in October, I’m a sophomore, and I’m older than several of the juniors that I know.

Alright thanks guys.

In Pennsylvania the cutoff is December 31st so I think you’re fine.
