Hey everyone, my first post here :D

Alright, so I'ma Sophomore and we are registering for next year's classes this week.
At my school, you can't take any AP classes as a Freshman/Sophomore, so this is pretty new for me. There's fifteen total AP classes offered, and when I was talking to some friends, they were talking about doing like four or five AP classes next year, and I was only planning on doing at mostt 3.
I'm sure that I'd be able to handle four AP classes, but I also want to have at least a class where I can have a break, which would be Yearbook, only thing is, that it's a year long class and it's just regular (no honors, ap,) I know plenttty of people doing this class, so it'd be a break, and I'd be able to just talk with friends for an hour and thirty minutes every day. Also, you're rarely in a classroom setting, and you can go out of school to sell advertisements and take pictures, so it'd be really fun. If i take it next year, I'd definitely take it Senior year also, and it'd be an honors credit.

Soo, This is what I think I might want my schedule to look like:
Honors Pre-Calc
Honors Chemistry
Honors French 3
AP English 11
AP US History
AP Statistics
Yearbook

and I'd take about 5 AP classes senior year, for a total of 8.

If I don't take Yearbook, I could do some of the easier AP classes.
and I really don't know if I should take the "me class" instead of doing the stuff that might benefit me later on.

So what wouldd you do? or what do you recommend?
Thanks Everryone :D

how is yearbook a class?

Wow, I’ve never seen a thread exactly like this before.

Well, I know that at other schools it’s a like a club, but at mine, it’s weird.
First you take Journalism 1, after that if you want to go further into journalism classes, you can choose newspaper or yearbook. Which are usually clubs, I guess.
So Yearbook is a yearlong class, and you can take it starting junior year, then you can take Yearbook 2 honors, which is senior year.

That is strange.

Do you plan on doing journalism as a major in college?

Does your school have 8 periods it block schedule?

Because you have 7 classes listed and one of which (Chem) requires a double period of lab.

But then it’s probably diff in your area

And yea, this is a little familiar …

^
My school does not do that. So I guess it depends. I have 8 blocks. 7 are classes. Non are double blocks

@BlackRose: Hahah, Actually, I plan on doing something business related, but I’m not doing any business classes after this year, because they don’t fit anywhere in my schedule, pretty dumb I know. hahah

@CPU: Yeah it’s 8 periods a year, and nahh, at our school Chemistry is only one semester, I didn’t even know that it was two semesters in other places.

Then when you apply to colleges in 2013 they will know you took a “filler” class. It will not look good and it can hurt your chances.

Do not kill yourself with an AP if it is not what you want but do not take a filler class. It looks really bad.

Can you instead do a different class?

All of our classes are full year except for a few electives.

Don’t take yearbook, I agree with blackrose

@BlackRose: Yeah, I haven’t thought about it like that, and I don’t know if I would take anymore business classes even if i don’t take yearbook. My school has only one busiiness class that’s honors (no ap), so I’d be able to take that, and then continuing to take the business classes wouldn’t help my GPA any, since the rest would be mainly for 9-10th graders. Also, our school’s cut down on online classes, so there are almost none available. so the only alternative I see would be two extra AP classes, which we do have plenty of, and I think with a bit more effort than I’m used to, I could do well in.

I do not even take electives. Only classes plus one study… Not filler classes either.

Electives for us are any classes you don’t need to take to graduate. For me, stats, Calc, physics, Latin (the third year), and foreign policy are electives.

Basically you need X amount of years/credits to graduate. Anything beyond is an elective

what other classes are offered during that block?

@BlackRose: It’s a large enough school with plenty of classes, so It’s almost a sure thing that I’ll get all the classes I ask for.
Are there any classes that you think would be good to finish off my schedule?

Take yearbook. It will not hurt your chances at colleges as long as you take other AP classes and keep your grades up. Plus it sounds like something you would enjoy. It is also a class at our high school, but you are expected to really work. There is too big a push by students to take as many AP classes as they can and the end result is that there is too much pressure on students to take the “right” classes and not explore to find new interests. In addition you meet a lot of interesting people in classes that you would not normally meet in AP classes. In the end, you will probably be in college for 4 years no matter how many AP tests you pass in HS- I know there are exceptions but more typically it will take 4 years. You have to realize that the posters on cc are not typical of HS students and tend to focus so much on getting into the “best” colleges that they don’t always stop to enjoy themselves on the way. Take year book, give yourself a break, and have fun!

well you want a class you can relax in
honestly an easy way to get a break without it looking bad would be to just get a studyhall.

But what do you like?
What is the subject you are strongest in?

Oh, I shoulda probably said this to begin witthh, but I honestly had little doubt in my mind that I was gonna take Yearbook, until we got these registration forms and a ton of kids were talking about all the AP classes they planned on taking (like five) and I was only doing 2, so I that’s why I added AP Statistics.

@Takeitallin: Yeahh, I really wouldn’t even be on here, if it wasn’t for how determined I saw other kids I knew to take as many AP classes as they could. But I’m not 100% sure, I might take yearbook just because it would be the break I need from everything else.

@BlackRose: I might do that, I’m not positive that my school has a studyhall though. My strongest subject is definitely math, which is why I decided to add AP Statistics. Besides math, Social Studies is probably my second best, so I could take AP Psychology and a study hall.

Do what you think is best. Check to see all that your school can give you.

and I just noticed that you are new on here, so welcome!!!
If I was in your position I would take that class but only because I want to be a journalist.

But since you’re new make sure to look around the site and chat with people. I have learnt soooooo much while being on this site it’s like crazy.

^__^
and make sure to join the class of 2013 page.

@BlackRose: I definittely will, and I’ll keep in mind what you all have said.
And hahah, yesss, my account was freshly made today, hahh
I got my friends’ opinions on what I should take, but I needed to hear from straightforward people like you guyss. and I knew about thiss.
and yess, i have to get acquainted, i’ma look around, don’t think i’ll use it too much for the rest of this year, but I’ll probably be using it more once i get into my junior yearr.

Thanks for everyone’s opinions so far though!
