Yearbook or extra AP Classes?

Journalism is a class at my school as well. It is one of my extracurriculars that i am devoted to so will it look bad if i take journalism all four years instead of another AP class as an elective?

If you’re planning on applying to top schools, you’ll need to keep up with your peers in terms of class rigor. That means if your peers are taking four or five APs, you should be too.

Take yearbook. At D’s school yearbook and newspaper are classes. After taking semester courses in journalism and desktop editing one may apply to become a newspaper or yearbook editor. If selected, you are required to take the class. That is because we have an award winning newspaper with a staff of 30+ people. The editors are all top students who would not have time to put in the effort to produce a quality newspaper if they had to do it as a club or after school hours. Most of them are taking 4 or more AP classes and are heavily involved in other extras like sports, debate, music, e.t.c. This is not a slacker class. The students develop leadership skills, learn to work with others, win journalism awards, and have a great time doing it. Yes, my D and her peers had to give up an AP class to do this (horror of horrors) but it has been well worth it. She is editor-in-chief this year and got accepted ED to a top LAC. Three others in the class have already been accepted to ivy league schools. There is a lot more to school than how many AP classes you can rack up. If you have a genuine interest in something, go for it! Yearbook will give you a lot more to talk about with a college interviewer than an AP class you didn’t really want to take.

@Momtuwu I think I am going to do Yearbook, and that’s really great for your daughter!
for me, it just seems like too fun of a class to pass up.
French 3 I might do over the summer online, do french 4 junior year, and then AP French senior year.
but I haven’t decided on this yet. but that would make my senior yearr 6 AP and Honors Yearbook.
and 9 ap’s overall, so i think it would be goood. i’ll have to talk to a guidance counselor about the online thing thoughh.

Do yearbook.

Colleges won’t care if you decided to take one non-academic class per year. You’re already taking six academic classes with three of them being honors and three being AP.

Yearbook for you is probably like band or art for a lot of kids. Colleges won’t mind that, especially if you stick with it.

BTW: I know kids at my school who have gotten into ivy leagues and other top colleges who had four years of band or four years of art and only 5-6 academic courses. Don’t worry about it. Do well in all of your classes and you’ll be just as competitive.

Yes at my school Yearbook is a VERY big deal. You have to get in the class… that means not just anyone gets in Yearbook it’s a big deal if you get in. My school’s yearbook class is not a slacker class either many kids think that until they get in Yearbook. It takes a lot of hard work and determination. You’ll be literally working on the yearbook almost all year. It’s a lot of time you put in, at my school anyway. I’ll be in yearbook this up coming year. Can’t wait!!! Lastly, Yearbook is a class at my school as well.

Take yearbook, lots of kids balance music electives and still take a rigourous curriculum.

Yearbook is a class at this HS also. and actually journalism meets the 10th grade English class requirement. Sophomores have 3 choices: English 10, English 10 honors and Journalism. They just added it this year and it pulled the kids from the Honors class so now there is only one section. Anyway, that is my tangent because s14 had a scheduling conflict and there is only 1 section.
