Ok, so I am currently a freshman and am trying to lay out my class schedule for the next couple of years. Last year, in 8th grade, I took Spanish 1 because it was a required class. I had a high A in it, but this year I opted to take French 1 just because I was interested in learning French. Now I regret this because of scheduling conflicts. To take all the classes I want to in junior year, I wouldn’t have space for French in my schedule. However, I heard that to get into a good college, they reccomend atleast 3/4 years of the same foreign language. So, I was thinking about taking French 2 this summer, French 3 sophomore year, and French 4 over next summer to get all my requirements in. Does anyone have any advice on what I should do? Would French be too hard to take over the summer? I just don’t want to have to spend my summer vacation worrying about school work. Taking it over the summer is also expensive. Also, does it make a difference whether I decide only to take up to French 3 rather than French 4? Would I not get into a good college if I only take 3 years rather than four? (I’m trying to go for really really good schools, such as Ivy League). Sorry if I didn’t explain it well enough! Thank you!
I think if you really are up for the workload you should do it! Personally if I had the money and time I’d take more language classes too. Having one consistent language is good it shows that you have the commitment to stick through the harder grammar. But if you feel it will actually cause your grade average to drop by being too much then don’t overwork yourself. Just ask yourself if you have the time and energy to put into it and if your family is willing to pay (you mentioned something of money). If you feel like it can be managed don’t pass up the chance! Knowing French can’t possibly harm you.
