Years of Foreign language?

I have a bit of a predicament. I am a junior and I'm currently in ap Spanish language. I signs up for ap spanish lit, but was just notified that not enough ppl signed up to run the class. As a result, I have been dropped to a lower level Spanish (honors).

My guidance counselor always says that 4 years of the same foreign language in hs is practically necessary to get in top caliber schools. However, I don't want to take the honors class in fear that it will drop my gpa.

Will it look bad that I only have 3 yrs of the same foreign language? Or will admissions be ok since i took the highest level offered?

As an aside, I also took russian for 1 yr, but couldn't continue because of schedule issues.

The admissions will not penalize you for your school’s faults. You can self study the AP Spanish exam, though.

I feel lucky to have had 6 years of German!

Colleges often look at foreign language in terms of level completed. The AP Spanish language that you are taking should already count as level 4 or 5. Also, most colleges give the same credit and placement for AP Spanish language and literature, so unless your high school offers an even more advanced post-AP course, you may not have any other worthwhile Spanish courses to take unless you take Spanish at a community college (or just find some native Spanish speakers in your school and talk to them in Spanish…).
