Yer Thoughts on the Campus

What do you all think about H's campus? I'm interested in your thoughts on the layout and general beauty of the buildings and area.

The Harvard campus isn't particularly attractive.

boston is amazing though

o i think the harvard campus is by far the est urban one ive seen, and that one area where they end the tour, by one of the residential colleges...gorgeous

zephyr--

are you serious? I think harvard has a gorgeous campus! I love living here!

It's funny how I've heard so many contrasting opinion. How can one person say it's not attractive while another thinks it's absolutely beautiful? I would think there woudl be a general consensus, as subjective as my quesh may seem.

well obviously there is a bias due to this being the Harvard board

I've thought for a long while that Harvard would be an amazing place to attend school, and my visit didn't disappoint. I arrived in the worste weather imaginable after a sleepless night and still loved the campus. However, more than any objective factor (like layout), I think it is the atmosphere that I am attracted to. For me, Harvard offered a very lively and exhilerating feel. The difficult thing about communicating the quality of a given campus, is that it's an extremely subjective call, but I hope that helps you a little bit.

I think it's ugly. Brick, brick, and more brick, and occasional hideous "art" that's worse than nothing at all. If you get bored of brick you can have vast expanses of concrete instead (Science Center, Mather, New Leverett, Carpenter, etc.) I like the fake Gothic of Yale and Chicago--at least it gives you something interesting to look at. My history prof told our class that Sever Hall was considered by some people to be the most beautiful building in America (uses 30 different types of brick!), and all I could think was ***???

There are exceptions--some buildings, like Annenberg and Barker, are gorgeous from the inside, if not the outside. Well, maybe "gorgeous" isn't the right word to use for an antler chandelier, but it's definitely something. Mem church looks pretty awesome at night. Widener and Langell are amazing (especially from the inside).

I think it's mostly beautiful, particularly the River Houses and the Old Yard. Most campuses have a few 60's monstrosities, and Harvard is no exception. But a lot of people have a clear idea of what a beautiful campus should look like (Gothic, or hilly, or whatever), and ones that don't match aren't beautiful. To me, the Lowell House courtyard in the snow is as good as it gets. It's just a matter of personal taste.

Agreed. I think Harvard is beautiful. The Yard in the Fall is just plain gorgeous.

lol if i got into harvard, id force myself to think it's gorgeous. hey im going to boston/new york/wash dc by train during winter break! i'll tell you after i go visit it.

It's amazing. The Fall is gorgeous, but I feel that I might soon argue that winter shows it off the best.

i love the brick style. more so than the gray gothic buildings of pton which everyone tells me is the most beautiful campus. to each his own. theyre all pretty.

i love the campus. love.

not the best campus beauty/landscaping wise ,but I honestly felt the most comfortable on that campus, so it's my favorite. Besides, Boston, the square, it's amazing!

The campus isn't really pretty at all. Sure, Cambridge is nice, but so are many rich elitist towns across the country. The brick is hardly grand and/or imposing like Yale's Gothic and Stanford's mission-style, nor does it have the peaceful atmosphere of most beautiful campuses.

It's a very good campus, and perhaps more importantly, the location can't be beat among the Ivies. When I visited Yale (on a gorgeous April day), I thought the campus was absolutely breathtaking, definitely a few notches above Harvard's, but Cambridge and Harvard Square vastly beat out New Haven, and that makes up for any difference in campus layout and aesthetics.

Yeah, Harvard's campus is quite awesome, I might agree. I took a class at the extension school there last year, and even on the coldest, most depressing winter days, the campus still looked beautiful. The location is amazing as well, smack down in the center of Cambridge and a hop or two from the center of Boston.

I think the official name for Stanford's architectural style is Taco Bell Modern.
