Which is a better education track for an accountant?

An undergraduate degree in English (I hear that accontants are known to be bad writers) or Economics with a Masters in Business Administration with a concentration in Accounting.

OR

An undergraduate degree in Accounting with a Masters in Finance.

I want to either to do managment, cost, or finanical accounting. Im not sure which yet.

That english degree would be useless. Economics could help but I guess you're looking at the time frame. Accountants do not need MBAs do be successful if they have CPAs. So probably the best bet would be to get an Accounting degree for bachelors. I don't know why you would need a Masters unless you want to do something else.

Oh I thought writing/communication skills are important with an accounting degree, thats what I have been reading. Oh I didnt know I didnt need an MBA. I thought states were requring an additional 30 hours beyond a four year degree to take the CPA exam.

First, I think you should major in accounting as an undergraduate. Most states require 150 credit hours to sit for the CPA exam, so make sure the accounting major at the school you attend is 150 credits (usually 5 years). Some schools award only a bachelors degree after completion of the 150 credits and some schools award a bachelor and masters degree.

The important thing is, as many other threads have stated, you must attain a good GPA (3.3>) and have EC's to show you are a well rounded person to get a good job in accounting.

At the college I work for, we place most of our best accounting major graduates in 3 of the 4 big accounting firms. The recruiters do not even want to talk to students with GPA's below 3.0. Our major is a 150 credit hour program that awards a bachelors degree.

They do, but they need not be a MBA or even graduate courses. So you could double major in English and Accounting and fulfill the 150-credit requirements.

morrismm, a 5-year 150-cr BS program? Interesting. Does the college have graduate business courses?

Yes, you could double major in English and Accounting if you wanted to but English by itself wouldn't work because you would have to take the 8 accounting classes for your cpa so you might as well have just wasted your English degree.

Oh okay well nevermind the English major. Maybe I will just double major or minor in Finance. I want to do managment accounting. I also had someone tell me that their college professor said Accounting with a degree in IT would give me a lot of job opportunites since companies are computerizing their systems.

ferryboat--no we do not have graduate business courses.

"I also had someone tell me that their college professor said Accounting with a degree in IT would..."

I also heard that and am considering a double major in ACCT. and Finance or ACCT. and Management Information Systems but I'm inclining towards the first one because I thought it would give me better opportunities.
