yes, another asian kid in need of stanford advice :-)

Primarily, i need chances at stanford SCEA...i know that the fact I'm an Asian MALE doesn't help whatsoever, and my chances probably are as good as anyone's, but i'd appreciate advice/whatever..thanks

Reasonably competitive school (99% to 4-year)

Rank: Top, second in class

GPA: 3.99 UW, 4.8-4.9 weighted (however, if Stanford doesn't take into consideration 9th grade grades, I have a 4.0 and about 4.9 WGPA)

SAT: 2280 (680 CR), 800 math 2, 800 chemistry, (plan to get 800 on lit or history)...this is a one-time score and i plan to retake in November to superscore 2400, hopefully

EC's& awards: president/founder of math club that helped school team win state title in contest (11,12), president/captain of chess club 10th and 12th (but in chess club all 4), numerous state math awards/recognition, state chemistry award, US national chem olympiad invitee, numerous school student of year awards, other smaller things

Summer:volunteer at nursing homes(i'm really worried that i havent done summer internship or jobs at all, but volunteer at nursing homes is something i really love to do) and helped raise money for a computer in Rec room, one year i helped for a week in a lab prepping solutions, etc...

Essay: will be very good (considerable time, 3+ months total writing them) and try to be unique...I turned my life around from being suspended and almost expelled in middle school and getting bad grades(yea i did some bad stuff) to what i've accomplished in high school (will this help in "unique"?)

Hooks: none at all, but i live very far away from home and have to be more "independent," idunno if this will help

sighs yes notflattering a resume (jeez, i wish i woulda done a sport or gotten a job), but Stanford is a school i really wanna attend!

Not just Stanford, but what schools fit me (which ivies)... Thanks for any suggestions/criticism :-(

O yeah...National merit semifinalist should be, all 5's on several AP's, I'm taking another 4 or 5 this senior year

Have your GC double check your essay before you send it. Sometimes mentioning bad behavior that a college might not otherwise know about can be detrimental.

Your chess and math activities probably take up a lot of time. But they really do push you into the dreaded 'math grind' asian box. And your CR score leaves something to be desired.

If Stanford is your dream, then apply! Work harder than you've ever worked on the application. But Stanford is disgustingly hard to get into. And your chances aren't much better than any other 'average' applicant.

Best wishes!

impressive.

You have a chance at Stan IMO, and all the ivys. The "lower" ivys i.e. Cornell and Brown should probably be a match for you while "middle" ivys such as Dart and Upenn should be slight reaches while top Ivys such as HYP will be a reach, although they are reaches for everyone.

oh, and i think being in the midwest helps for Ivies. Better than living in Cali or the east at least.

thanks much, ses...one of the things i did in MS almost got me arrested, but i've NEVER done anything since, and i still am disgusted by what i've done in the past...i wanna be honest in my essay and say i've done this and this, and i've learned so many life lessons that i've turned out a-okay...but i guess i'll try to keep this honesty in check

^It can be done very effectively, but it's hard to write an essay like that. Make sure that lots of people look at it before sending it.

US national chem olympiad invitee

That with your scores gets you in SCEA easily.

Are you American or International?

I'd say very slim chance as an international, no chance if you need aid.

Small chance as a citizen but with the pool you're in, weak ECs and just average (for S) SATs, it is small.

uhm, im a permanent resident who should be a citizen soon (before the app deadline)..and i must clarify the US national chem olympiad thingy, its not really prestigious unless you make it to summer boot camp lol....but you do have to be invited, somehow, im not exactly sure...but itsnot like the physics olympiad screening test that EVERY1 can take..uhhhh
1.) dont need aid that badly (income <100 grand)
2.) In what areas do i lack the most?
3.) what do u guys think of my essay topic
i hope im notasking for tooo much, but i really appreciate this

bumpitybump

bump...........

Did you pass the first round for the USNChO? If not, then the phrase "Chem Olympiad invitee" is questionable.

I took the USNCO National Exam (about a thousand chem students are invited to take the national exam)

better try university of phoenix

...thanks very much haller

and while im at university of phoenix, ill be sure to send a cactus to ur house :-)

@llpitch

Errr...no. USNCO qualifiers are not that rare. It is much, much easier to qualify for USNCO than USAMO. My schools has 3-4 USNCO qualifiers each year (and most don't even bother to take it) while only 3 USAMO qualifiers in history (60 or so years). Honestly, you can just pay attention in AP Chem class and you'll learn enough to qualify for USNCO. Anyways, USNCO isn't really a major hook. So I'd say you have under 50% chance of getting in because of no other big awards.

Yeah, stupidkid's pretty much right, so....yea lol...and USAMO is extremely competitive compared to USNCO

Oh I really only know about USABO and USAMO so I figured USNCO would be good as well. w/e

bump, please
