Yes. Another Chance Thread.

Hi, I love Northwestern. I am anxiously counting down the days till decision-day. (D-Day haha) I am applying as an Economics Major and particularly for the MMSS program. Specific consideration regarding each program will be appreciated.

I am most worried that I may not be considered a well-rounded enough student.
Unlike some (maybe even most) I don't play a sport and my number of club activities/awards/etc. pales in comparison with some of the other amazing chance threads I have seen.
But one thing I can say is that the few activities I did participate in, I dug deep into each of them spending 3-4 years in all of them.

Also, I tried to gear my electives/activities towards a business/economics focus.
Hence I took: Accounting for Business, Accounting for Merchandising, IB Business and Management, AP Macro Economics classes to demonstrate my clear focus.
My other activities are listed below, the two that particularly supplement my focus are: Economics Research Assistant @ University of CA, Irvine and Future Business Leaders of America (President)

Anyhow, an honest chance post would be appreciated.

Essays:
Personal Statement directly looks into who I am.
Short Statement was about my experiences as pianist/organist at church.
Northwestern Statement considered the school holistically a little bit an then my personal interest in economics and my personal fit with NU.
Northwestern Statement on Research, basically an informal abstract of my Great Depression research at UC Irvine.
MMSS Essays, highlights a sincere interest in Mathematics and Economics/my aspirations as an economist.

Recommendations:
My Business & Management Teacher is also my FBLA advisor. She wrote me a pretty good one no doubt. She said she raved about my analysis of US Airways and their liquidity crisis (a paper I wrote Junior Year).

The Professor I worked under at UC Irvine also wrote me a great recommendation. He's one of the best Great Depression economists in America. He focused mainly on my work experience as a economics research assistant, my passion/talent for the subject, and other stuff.

You posted the same thing on UChicago’s forum. I know you must be very nervous (just as everyone else, including me, is!), but really no one can offer you any meaningful insight into your likelihood of acceptance beyond the assurance that, with your stats, you stand a chance.

yeah of course. I was scared to post my chances before but I took a step out of the dark. anyhow thanks for calming me down.

But really, can someone give a cold, unbiased chance post?
Northwestern is really my tops along with two other schools.

Very good chance

No one’s a lock, but you have an excellent chance.

As to your ECs. To be honest, I thought they were above average. Your comment – that others have more clubs, but that you dug deeper resonates. It’s the old argument of "depth vs breadth’. Most of the people who comment regularly (but not all) believe that colleges would rather see depth – Especially where there is demonstrated accomplishment in some of them. Though I have no specific knowledge of the FBLA awards, it looks like you meet this standard.

Good luck.

Wow, ur stats were great, but what really tipped me over is how specific and planned out u r with all those courses for economics! U really do show passion for economics and I hope u get into mmss and nu. i applied to both, and I certainly did not have as much economics courses (like 0 when I applied) and lower stats. Good luck! Ur one of the few that I really imagine getting in :)

CHILL. what is it with people with ridic stats crying over whether or not they will get into overrated schools? enough, people like that are just being obnoxious and it’s annoying to us regular people. go do homework or something

lienad60 - With your stats, you should relax, I bet you’ll get into most of your school choices. Also, colleges don’t look for “well rounded” students, but those who excel and have shown passion through their studies and extracurriculars in a concentrated area. They’re not looking for students who are in 10 clubs, play 3 sports, etc… You AP’s and SAT scores are well above many others, in fact your SAT II’s may be overkill! But, anyway, stop chancing yourself… you’re making everyone jealous!

OP

I see no weaknesses in your stats/ec’s, etc. You have as good a chance as anyone and a better than most.
