What would be my chances if I got a 32 -34 on the ACT ...i plan on explaining the situation with SAT with a letter...i think my friend started a topic like this for me......

Excellent chance. Top schools, including Ivys need strong URM applicants like you. Borderline SATs won't sink you. If JHU is you're dream, apply ED.

You're in ED, without a doubt--you're a URM, plus you come from a poor socioeconomic background. Even RD, you have an excellent chance and would get in easily as long as your ACT scores are high. But if you really like JHU, apply ED like Robert said.

JHU's admit rate for black URMS according to the journal of black higher education is ONLY 33%, she is FAR from a shoe-in. These chance threads are worthless as none of you guys know what the adcoms really do when they meet.

lol you posted this under like every single college...(Carnegie mellon, williams, etc.)

Blah...while we are not official admissions staff, I'm pretty sure the OP and everyone who creates these chance threads knew that already.

BTW, 33% is 9% higher than the overall admission rate was this year for prospective freshman (24%) so that's a pretty significant benefit for URMs.

33% was when JHU's admit rate was 30%.

Oh, I could be wrong then.

Anyways, to the OP, your chances will be excellent if you can either obtain an excellent ACT score or boost your SAT I score. You really should have a good score in one of these two tests, though.

SAT I scores aren't really that great but your extracurriculars are excellent. The fact that you are an urm and come from a poor socioeconomic background should help. Actually, if you boost your SAT I scores, you could even go for the Iveys and Stanford.

keep in mind that JHU's applicant pool is equally as strong if not stronger than the ivies in the biology, chemistry, biomedical eng. and hard sciences.

Johns Hopkins clearly gets the ABSOLUTE best students in these fields applying so while you will be competitive, I agree that there is NOBODY that is a shoo-in to a place like Hopkins. ED would boost your chances if you LOVE Hopkins and you do not want to be anywhere else.

what happened to the declared major not mattering for JHU admissions except for BME

It doesn't matter what you apply to (except biomed). But as a student, you're going to look like a lot of other kids in the pool I'm guessing. Never assume anyone is a shoo-in at this level of selectivity.
