Ok guys,
On the Yale News it said that Yale has started mailing the 60-80 applicants in Science/Engineering who they want to attend YES-W. Do you think if one were chose, they would have already received a call/email? It says the STARTED mailing this week (on Thursday, I think), so I wasn't sure.

On CC I read that a bunch of people already know, but I dearly hope some of those letters have yet to be sent. I would glady welcome one sometime next week ;)

Hahah. I concur!

It says “Invitations to YES-W will be mailed starting this week” so there is still a chance!
Only 60-80 students are invited though, but we’ll both remain hopeful :)!

Lol as soon as I read that these things were being mailed, I dashed to my mailbox! We both will just have to be patient and hopeful. Hope we both get a letter/call soon:)

hopeful, but doubt i’ll receive it. pretty interesting though

I was pretty surprised just to hear about this “program” (I guess you call it that) to attract more science students. I won’t expect anything, but this will definitely be in the back of my mind for the next week hahaha.

Same here!
I’m just crossing my fingers that I do. I mean I have done pretty-cutting edge research at my State University, taken AP Chem, AP Bio, and AP Physics and my essays were about science.

my opinion is that these are mainly for people who have won awards in major competitions, like USABO or math/physics olympiad, that kinda stuff.

In the article it noted that professors are sorting the applications to pick the YES people, so I’m guessing they’re gonna use major awards as an easy guide to pick.

I don’t have national-level math/science awards unfortunately, though I have my own little niche. I agree that professors will be looking at major awards as a quick guide to see who they want to pick. Looks like we’ll wait for news in April, folks. Keep your heads up!

basically I feel like they’re sending out a message that unless you get those awards, you’re not a competent mathmatician/scientist…

^I see what you mean. It does seem that way in a certain light, though I won’t be offended if I don’t get a letter and end up being accepted (like that’s gonna happen…). Looks like they just want people that show EXTREME proficiency and dedication to math/science/engineering.

Well it’s always good to be hopeful!

HAHA.
Well Im just worried that if they take these 60-80 geniuses that the rest who don’t get called/mailed who are Math/Science, have much less shot of making it in April.

^ actually I think in general, if you applied to SCEA for yale, you’ll have a better shot. After all, they do want to increase their math/science students, and the 60-70 people definately won’t cut it.

Most likely they don’t want to select too much because the admin office won’t have time to look over all those science/math people’s apps… then the professors would run the place!

Ya hopefully I’m still in the running :)!

Hmmm I’ve heard that SCEA and regular have equal chance.

@captrick

My son got the phone call and the letter in the mail, but he did not win any of those awards you listed. He however has shown great passion for science and i am sure must have reflected somewhere in his application. By the end of his junior year, he had taken 9 AP subjects, 8 of which are 5s. He has 800 in SAT II in Chemistry, Math II, World History, and 790 in Physics
I am telling you this just to show that you can get in without the national awards, it is the totality of your application that matters.

God luck to you

Same here – I got the letter, and the best “award” I have is AIME (I failed miserably out of the first round of the Physics Olympiad). I’ve done research, but nowhere near publishing, and I’ve taken the AP sciences. That’s quite literally it.

But I wonder if they try to invite a 50/50 male/female ratio…

The mailing was on last Monday and Tuesday and that was it, I’m not sure when exactly did admission people made the call. But to answer this thread, the mailing was over on last Tuesday.

Thanks Kempner. Do you know if they called everyone to whom they sent a letter? I would assume so. Back to regular programming everyone…

If you login and you get something along the lines of not being an applicant, then I think it means you weren’t selected…

Kempner how sure are you about that, because on the news it said that they were “starting to mail out last week”.

Rawxfish–have the students chosen for the YES-W been able to log in here with their normal ids?
