yet another chance me thread!

SAT : 2200
Subject tests: 740 Math, 710 U.S History, 680 Chem
GPA: 4.02 UW: Not sure
Course Rigor: 2 HN 9th grade, 3 HN 1 AP 10th grade, 3 AP 2 HN 11th grade, 6 AP 12th grade

EC: All honor societies (5) key club, tennis for 3 years.
Volunteer: Red cross certified instructor

Do I have a decent shot? I know that my ECs are less than stellar. However, I'm prepared to write a kick-ass essay.

anyone???

you will need to write many kick ass essays. your stats are within the threshold of chicago admissions, but you will need to demonstrate their desired personality in your essays.

Whatever the essay topic might be, I’m gonna try to convey my belief that I want to learn for the sake of learning, not because it’ll get me employed.

My major will be a double major in math + philosophy btw.

^haha, chicago is the place to go, then :)

and that’s one of the desired aspects they’re looking for.

should i apply ed?

you mean EA?

it’s most always a good idea to apply EA.

I don’t think chicago has ED.

You got the right attitude about UChicago. I hope you get in. Your stats is fine.

one thing, however:

if you’re interested in math, you should know that Chicago’s emphasis is on theoretical maths, not applied (the useless stuff, mostly). and philosophy kinda goes with the useless stuff, too, lol.

if you’re interested in the theoretical rather than the practical, chicago is a good place to go. if you’re looking at applied math, you may want to add other places to your list.

There IS an applied mathematics major, though!

My GPA and SAT were pretty much the same as yours, and i was admitted. If you’re worried about ECs, perhaps you could go do something this summer (volunteer, job, etc). If you’re not worried about it, no problem. I remember in the acceptance letter it said that uchicago accepts people based on their words and not numbers. So essays are super important! Be original, thoughtful, and avoid being pretentious. Convey what you want to say in your own way, and the amount of time you spend crafting the essay really shows through your words. Relax, have fun, and your writing will speak for itself. Good luck!
