Yet another chance thread...

I'm a junior in New Jersey with an unweighted GPA of about 92 and a weighted of about 96 (maybe a 97). My first SAT score was a 1980 and I am taking them again on Saturday. I have, regrettably, taken 1 honors course throughout my high school career, but will be taking three AP courses next year. I will have taken four years of Latin as well. I have participated actively in theatre, chorus council, Latin Honors Society, and Tri-M Music Honors Society. These have led to several various leadership and community service hours. It is my undying dream to get into the Schreyer Honors College. Do you think this is possible with these stats. Also, I am 25% Puerto Rican. I am looking to go into History and Political Science. Any help, opinions, or advice would be greatly appreciated.

I think you’ll definitely get in to the regular college, not sure about the Honors college though. Your stats are impressive though and I’m sure you’ll have a shot.

Thanks. Does anybody have any advice on what I can do now through September to improve my chances for Schreyer? Or any other opinions? Any help would be greatly appreciated :)

Rather than start a new thread I figured I’d post my stats here. I’m a junior fron New Jersey with a weighted GPA of 3.6, 780 critical reading, 600 math and 610 writing. I’ve taken at least 3 honors classes every year and one AP this year. Next year I’m taking 4 AP classes. I’m a three year starter and captain of my wrestling team, I run cross country, played football and ran track. I’m a member of U.S Congressman Frank LoBiondo’s youth advisory council and i’ve participated in multiple programs with my local government as well as some community service stuff, including Big bros. Big sisters. I’m also very interested in the Naval ROTC and Political Science programs at PSU.

Dmooers
I would say that you will likely get in, just make sure to apply before the November deadline and to do your best first semester of senior year. Good Luck

My suggestion is for you to spend time on your essays. I’ve known kids that have amazing stats, but did not get accepted. Also, the more leadership positions the better, but the SHC sees through stats that are “just one more thing” on your resume. I was accepted this year, so you can ask me any more questions.

Thanks. What do you mean by they see through things that are just one more stat. I find myself quite good at essay writing and have several teachers who can revise them for any errors, so I’m not concerned there. I also have a lot of leadership experience and will be getting quite a bit more over the next year. Do you think these could balance out the weak points in my stats?

From reading your activities, they seem pretty good. Most of the honors kids that get accepted have similar activities. The kids that seperate themselves from people that are denied admission with their essays. I’m like to stress that they essays are the most important. I know people who had good, solid essays and did not get in. Make sure your essays are unique and show your passion for your major.

One more thing, I’m not so sure about your class schedule. It’s good you’re taking APs this year. Most of the honors kids I talked to at FTCAP took all honors and AP classes throughour high school. Schreyers really looks at the rigor of the classes you take and your ability to succeed.

I’m most concerned about my schedule. Thanks for the advice

One more question. Do you think that, should I get a high score on my last SAT (say 2150 or over), it would be a good idea to submit SAT II’s in subjects I’d get a high score on? Just so I have another stat they can look at?
