I know I'm not amazing like most people, I'm just hoping for Olin (hopefully they'll like my Theatre ECs...which you know if you're involved in theatre, they take up most of your time) and my MIT interview went well...?? I'm not like --most-- of you guys; my school is uber crappy w/ limited opportunities :( (ex: only 1 other person is taking subject tests this year...I don't even know of anyone else who took them while I've been in HS...CC taught me everything I need to know about that! :P) Excuses, excuses (lame ones, at that) I know.

I'm also applying to:

Boston U
Carnegie Mellon U
Cornell U
Illinois Inst Tec
Johns Hopkins U
Rensselaer Polytec I
Rochester I Tec
Stanford U
U Calif Berkeley (I'm OOS!)
U Calif Los Angeles (I'm OOS!)
U Southern Calif
Washington U St. L.
Worcester Polytec I

Safety/Match/Reach ????

Woah pushed back to the 3rd page already!

Hey. I’m no authority on chances, but I recognize your username from the Olin forum, so I thought I’d say hi. It’s also a free bump.

I really like Olin too, so hopefully we will see each other at those weekends they have (can’t remember what they call them) in Feb/March!

MIT: Reject
Boston U: Safety to low match
Carnegie Mellon U: Reach (50% chance of getting in)
Cornell U: Reach
Illinois Inst Tec: Don’t know very well
Johns Hopkins U: Reach (50% chance of getting in)
Rensselaer Polytec I: Don’t know
Rochester I Tec: Don’t know
Stanford U: High reach (20% chance)
U Calif Berkeley (I’m OOS!): Reach (35% chance)
U Calif Los Angeles (I’m OOS!): Reach (45% chance)
U Southern Calif: Low to mid reach
Washington U St. L.: High reach (20% chance)
Worcester Polytec I: Don’t know

Your SAT Subject Test scores are supremely bringing you down.

Atrophic, how can carnegie mellon be a reach while cornell is a low reach?

i think all your chances are distorted

Hey, Lorax (is that referring to the Dr. Seuss book? lol) thanks for the bump! Yeah, I’m really hoping I get at least to candidates weekend…I felt good about my app.

Atrophic, what do you think about Olin?..And yes, am really upset about my subject test scores, but oh well…I’m hoping my ACT will somewhat make up for it. =/…I do know that someone from my school district was accepted to MIT w/ 33 ACT/720 math II/590 Phys/ranked 2nd or so and he was into band and gymnastics heavily (like me to theatre) so I’m thinking maybe a 1% chance hahaha.

Some of them are. I did them in a hurry without really thinking about everything. Let me try again and not do ALL of the colleges you put.

MIT is a reject; I’m sorry, but they reject even people with perfect 2400’s and whatnot, and you don’t have many math/science awards.

Cornell, John Hopkins, and Carnegie Mellon are all on the same level: you stand a chance at getting in, but your SAT scores might drive them away from you. I think if your essays are great, you stand a better chance at getting in.

UC Berkeley and UCLA are about the same as above, except more difficult because you’re OOS. I think they could easily get someone like you from California, which is not a good thing.

WUSTL and Stanford are very high reaches. I think that if you make everything SHINE, you could get in, but it’s on the borderline of reject.

You’re obviously not an idiot; you’ll definitely get into places. :D

Also: I don’t know very much about Olin except that it’s SUPER competitive and practically free if you get in. If it has the same level of competition with MIT, then I’d say the same: reject.

Are you taking the toughest course load in your school? You don’t seem to have as many AP classes as other people applying to MIT.

You should definitely improve on your SAT scores too, as they are an equating factor the colleges use in seeing how tough is it for someone to get your 4.0 UW GPA in your school, and from your scores, it doesn’t look tough.

“You’re obviously not an idiot; you’ll definitely get into places.”

Lol well that makes me feel better! :D

Also, that guy I mentioned above ^ did not have any math/science awards either, and he seemed comparable to me (but he may have been busier)…so maybe 0.5% chance at MIT lol.

“Are you taking the toughest course load in your school?”

Yes…We aren’t allowed to take APs until senior year (besides the US History AP junior year) and now 4/5 of my classes are Honors.

Also, I’m assuming you mean improve my subject test scores? My ACT will cancel out my SAT I, and I thought my ACT score would negate the notion that it was easy to make a 4.0 (which it wasn’t, of course.) (not sure if what I said made sense)

I don’t think ACT scores “negate” GPA. They’re used together to make a decision.

I meant my ACT would negate the notion that it was easy to get a 4.0…Not my 4.0 itself.

Not really though…

I don’t think a college admissions officer would look at your ACT score and GPA and say, “Hey, this kid got a 30 on his ACT, so therefore it’s hard to get a 4.0 GPA at his school.”

He might say something more like this: “Hey, this kid got a 30 on his ACT AND he got a 4.0/4.3 without taking AP/honors classes for the first three years because he couldn’t.”

I’m hoping…

This must be the fastest moving forum on CC…Woooo

Anyone else?

It’s a name.

I won’t comment on chances, since I don’t really know, but you should check out Rose-Hulman.

I actually did submit an online app. to there on a whim b/c it was free and there wasn’t an essay (well, optional), but I never got a letter from them or anything so I haven’t really followed up on it…

Did you send in a transcript and recommendation?

No, I haven’t. I didn’t know I needed a rec…I wasn’t really into it that much, but I might as well apply…
